My Backyard

One of the coolest parts of my job is hosting tour groups that visit our community. It's so much fun to show others our great city and help them explore everything we have here. I have had two bus groups here in the past couple weeks, and showing them around reminded me of how much there is in Grinnell and how little I actually take advantage of. Leading these tour groups has been a great way to "play tourist" and take advantage of things I don't regularly spend time doing.

It's really quite incredible to think about what's in our own backyard. I've spent the past couple weeks actually taking advantage of some of the cool things we have here. And I hope you'll consider doing the same. Pick one day and plan a "stay-cation" in Grinnell. Get out and explore our city. Here's some of the cool things I've discovered recently in my own backyard:
  • The new exhibit at Faulconer Gallery is stunning. It is titled "Water" and the gallery is filled with gigantic photographs illustrating the role water plays in our lives. My favorite is this photo, which is an aerial view of a barren Indian Reservation right next to a Scottsdale suburb full of green lawns. We have an amazing art gallery right in our own backyard-and there's no admission fee!
  • I spent a gorgeous afternoon at Rock Creek State Park recently. It was glorious to be away from my computer and outside surrounded by green trees and the sparkling lake. Whether it's camping, boating, fishing, hiking, or picnicking, the park is definitely a place I need to visit more often.
  • The Jewel Box Bank is another amazing place in our backyard. Since it's my office, I definitely take it for granted. But the design is so intricate and beautiful, both inside and out. Please feel free to stop in and admire it next time you walk by. I'll even give you the full tour if you'd like!
  • Grin City Collective-how cool is it that we have an artist residency right here in Grinnell!? One of the neat things that's stuck with me from my tour is how much they stress collaboration and community involvement among their artists, unlike many residencies where each artist concentrates on their own thing. There's a lot of creative energy at Grin City, and it's attracting artists from all over the country and world.
  • There is just so much history here. Take a few minutes to walk downtown and actually look up. Have you ever wondered what all those old names mean on the buildings? Here are some videos of a few historical landmarks that you may find interesting.

We still have plenty of summer and warm weather left, so get out and explore Grinnell. Take advantage of the things right in your own backyard. What are some of your favorite places to visit? Hit reply and let me know! And if Grinnell isn't in your backyard, please come visit! Shoot me an email and I'll help you plan your Grinnell getaway.

-Emily Counts

P.S. In case you are a procrastinator, here is a reminder of what's coming in a few months. Get out and be a tourist in your own town before the snow flies!
