Grinnell Games Volunteers
Small is the new big
The team at the Chamber of Commerce in Grinnell is working like mad women getting prepared for the first few events of the summer. We have three HUGE events in a row the first three weeks in June: Friday Fest with Standing Hampton on June 6, three days of Grinnell Games June 13-15, and then MonteFest in Montezuma June 21 with a huge downtown carnival and country music stars Phil Vassar and Tate Stevens.
Between the three of us, we have coordinated hundred events in our careers. The most difficult part of events in small places is never the advertising or eight million details that go along with each event, it is the number of volunteers it takes to pull it all off. When we did RAGBRAI, it took 400 volunteers which is a big number in a city of 9,200 and an even bigger number in a town of 3,000 like Montezuma. Between these three June events, we have 300 volunteer shifts to fill.

We want very much to showcase our community and bring visitors and dollars to our local economy. It is in fact central to our mission. But with three events on back to back weekends, we are going to need lots of volunteers to help our small cities do big, big events. Being hosts to thousands of visitors can lead (and indeed has led) to people falling in love with our towns, and coming back to start families, build businesses and retire. We really need your help. Please help us show the rest of Iowa how we do it here, that this place matters to us, that our place is the center of everywhere rather than the middle of nowhere, and that Small Is The New Big. Thanks, we are grateful for your help.
