Do It Like Brent

There is this guy named Brent Jaeger. I am his Facebook friend so I know much about what Brent does in his free time. And what Brent does is invaluable to our local economy. He uses the check-in function on Facebook whenever he's out and about in Grinnell. Sometimes it's when he's spending money shopping or eating out, and sometimes he's just experiencing things that are happening around town. During the holidays, it was like tracking Santa Claus, or a fun reality version of Where's Waldo. I found myself wondering just where Brent would go next! His posts are always reminding me to get out and experience Grinnell.

It's very hard for small businesses in a small economy to keep top of mind. It costs a fortune for our businesses here to remind you enough times that your brain thinks of them when you need something. What Brent does is to remind me and several hundred of his friends every week of what's out there. He doesn't write long posts, he simply tells you he picked up a New York Times at McNally's  or that he took his wife out to the Peppertree for Valentines Day or he is at a concert at Grinnell College.

Social media levels the playing field for small businesses and small places like Grinnell who don't have bazillion dollar advertising budgets. But it only works if people like Brent take just a minute to share theirkeep local businesses top of mind. Brent embodies what it means to live local, he is keeping Grinnell's economy moving and doing a huge service for those business owners who every day are hoping that more of us spend our dollars here. Use the check-in feature, tweet about where you shop, share a photo on Instagram, and use the power of social media to talk up our small businesses. Do it like Brent.

-Angela

P.S. If you know of any college students interested in an internship this summer, we are looking for an Events & Marketing Intern.
