The sky is falling
Every January feels like the sky is falling. This is the month that businesses often close their doors if they aren't going to make it another year. I get calls of concern that the downtown will become vacant, that we'll no longer have places to shop and eat in Grinnell.
In January of 2010, nine small businesses closed in Grinnell. We thought maybe if we found a way for them to co-exist and share expenses, we might be able to bring them back, thus the Marketplace on Main was born. We found out that each business was so different that even sharing expenses did not make them viable, and that there are many reasons a business fails, not just high overhead.
For those entrepreneurs closing their doors right now, the sky does feel like it is falling. I had eight successful startups before my first business failure. It was the very first time in my life I felt shame. I was so embarrassed that I wanted to move away, and it took effort to get up each day. But, over time, I realized that I had learned more in my colossal failure than I did in all the successful ventures combined. It is why many angel investors won't invest in entrepreneurs who haven't had at least one business fail, because tremendous business acumen comes from failure. Failure means you tried, it means that you bet it all, that you had the courage to dream and start something new. In this country, we encourage failure because only from entrepreneurial risk does innovation occur, do jobs get created. It is truly what makes our country go.
On the local level, it feels extra scary when businesses close. Every time I become aware of a closure, it brings back all of the emotions of my own business failing. If I have a chance to talk to the owner, I tell them "you are still you without this place, you will live to see another day, and right now you need to take care of you and to celebrate the true grit it takes to take a chance." If you know someone who closed their doors, embrace them and don't leave them off the guest list at your next gathering. Tell them that you admire their insatiable courage. Entrepreneurs see opportunity where others do not. The efforts of business owners big and small are extraordinary.
Our community wouldn't exist without the entrepreneurs who take incredible risks to try something new. This time of year makes us all uneasy while we watch some stores close their doors. While they can never be replaced, know that there are people-even some of the same ones who are closing their stores right now-who are planning new, exciting ventures in Grinnell this year.
