Taking it up a notch
I have become obsessed with vitality and how to go about making it happen in a place, specifically Grinnell.  I spent a week listening to more than 100 residents from all walks of life talk about what they liked about Grinnell and what they thought needed work. I heard about a lot of great things (it's actually amazing how passionate so many people are about this place), but I also heard a theme of things that need work. That theme centered on more things to do, more activity, and just more hours in the day that you can find something going on here. The word "vitality" sums those things up, and it is something chamber of commerces and all community development organizations try to facilitate.

I am the mother of a 14-year-old boy and have a very busy job, and I can't imagine needing more to do in the day. But you hear a lot about the need for added vitality when you listen to our new residents, young workforce, empty nesters and even retirees. We do not want to be like many small towns that roll up the streets at 6pm, where young people don't have a chance in heck of meeting other young people. We've really got to crank up what experts call our "18 hour vitality" to be competitive in attracting successful businesses, new jobs, and more residents. That means we need to have 18 hours of activity and life every day.

So let's hear it. What's on your vitality list? What things would help Grinnell towards 18 hour vitality? Think big, think small, inside the box or way outside. What are we missing to take this place up a notch?
-Angela
