It's a Big Deal
Consumer spending accounts for 70% of Grinnell's economy. About 18% of all retail sales happen during the holidays. How you decide to spend your money in the next four weeks is a really big deal. Our local economy will grow if you spend money here or shrink if you don't. For some retailers, holiday shopping accounts for between 20 and 40 percent of total sales and in Grinnell what you do in the next four weeks at those businesses will determine if they will be open another year. This Saturday, Small Business Saturday, I am asking you to not go to Des Moines, Iowa City or Williamsburg outlets.  Stay in Grinnell eat at our restaurants, and shop at our stores. Invite your friends in the metro areas to shop and eat in Grinnell with you. They say that the hottest trends in retail are about unique and unusual. And Grinnell is all about unique and unusual, a true one-of-a-kind sort of place.
Go to the Chamber's facebook page and tell us what you bought locally, interesting things you found, offer others gift ideas, and share your favorites.
Please, in the next four weeks, spend more here. In Oskaloosa, average sales per retailer in 2011 were $330,000, in Pella $325,000, and in Grinnell only $257,000. Can you imagine what another $70,000 dollars spent at each restaurant and retailer over a year would mean to those businesses, to Grinnell's economy? To be exact, just by keeping up with our Osky and Pella counterparts in spending per retailer would mean an additional 24 million
dollars added annually to our economy. Wow! So start this weekend, and please do everything you can to spend holiday dollars in Grinnell.
