We are also trying to round up six functioning microwaves for the Emergency Family Shelter. Please contact CHUM if you can help.

The Awareness Campaign
was recently launched in Duluth to help remove limitations from the disability community and give them a chance to unite together to pursue their true potential and move beyond the status quo. The campaign aims to create a world where people with disabilities can build bonds with others by realizing they are not alone in how they feel or what they experience. Read more...

Support Local Students
CHUM is working with the Duluth School District 709 to ensure school supplies and backpacks are provided for children before the first day of school. We need your help as we collect backpacks and school supplies at CHUM through August 25th. Families with limited resources will be provided school supplies and backpacks at this event.

Nearly 900 backpacks were distributed in 2014. You can donate backpacks and supplies or money so we can purchase backpacks and supplies.

Success Through Collaboration
CHUM Visits Houston
In June, CHUM Center Outreach staff members Deb Holman and Mark Engebretsen were part of a group of 5 Duluthians, including 2 Duluth police officers, who shadowed and learned from the Houston police department's Crisis Intervention Training Program (CIT) and Homeless Outreach Team. The group received tremendous hospitality from their hosts and gained insights into communication and crisis intervention strategies between police departments, hospitals, organizations, and shelters. CIT offers training for police officers to communicate, serve, and protect individuals with mental illnesses. The Homeless Outreach team assists homeless individuals in finding proper medical care, shelters, bus fare, and employment.

CHUM staff members were impressed with the amount of
mental health training the police officers had and there awareness that people who are homeless and/or dealing with mental health  issues need consistent help. Houston is leading by example to show how compassion, understanding, and collaboration can create effective law enforcement and promote healthier lives.

For more information, check out this article about the Houston Police Department which is bringing hope to the homeless.
Theology Brown Bag Lunch Series
Join CHUM in theological reflection and hear from diverse faith perspectives to deepen our community commitment to faith-based justice. Please bring your own lunch as we strengthen and grow our power as an interfaith organization.

Tuesday, July 14th, from 12-1PM at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth:  "Closing the Circle: Social Action, Prayer, and Theological Reflection" Led by UUCD Minister Rev. Bruce Johnson

At this brown-bag lunch, we'll learn a simple and practical model for theological reflection, and apply it to the work we do for CHUM and in other areas of our lives. How do we balance the inner and outer dimensions of spiritual practice as we move between action and contemplation?

Tuesday, July 21st, from 12-1PM at St. Michael's Catholic Church: "Beauty In Worship," led by "traveling scholar" and Notre Dame PhD Candidate Audrey Seah.

Beauty is one of three transcendental means by which Christians throughout the ages have used to contemplate the mystery of God. In doing so, they render the infinite and invisible discernible to our finite natures. Thus, it is reasonable to expect beauty in worship, the locus of our encounter with the divine. However, what should beauty look like in a diverse world where it is often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Join us to discuss!

Open Your Heart

Make a difference for families in Duluth who are hungry by accepting the 2015 Food Shelf Challenge from Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless and the CHUM Food Shelf during July. When school is out for summer vacation, many children miss out on free school meals and their families turn to us for support. The Food Shelf served 1,834 children during the summer months last year. The Open Your Heart challenge funds will proportionally match all cash donations received by the Food Shelf, resulting in more money to help families in need.
