On 28 May, Professor Carlo Guarnieri will deliver the 2014 Annual Lecture in Law & Society, with his analysis of the changing role of the judge in the 21st Century.

Panel Debate: Could Scotland join the EU? EC Hon Director General debates issues with political and legal experts
As the dust settles on the European elections, we turn our attention to the question of an independent Scotland's membership of the EU, with a public debate next week.
The Honorary Director General of the EC will debate with political and legal experts the issue of Scotland's joining the EU, should it win independence in September, and explore the wider consequences for independence movements across Europe. Frank Field MP warns of 'failure of nerve' over Modern Slavery Bill Roundtable of experts discuss measures to combat human trafficking
Earlier this month, at our roundtable on the business of human trafficking, Frank Field MP, the Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Select Committee on the Modern Slavery Bill, was joined by representatives from anti-slavery groups, business, and the law to discuss changes to the Modern Slavery Bill and other efforts to combat human trafficking.
Participants argued for the implementation of laws to help protect victims of trafficking from prosecution, and called for increased lobbying of MPs to ensure that necessary amendments to the Bill are made before its expected announcement in the Queen's speech on 4th June.

Future of privacy at stake, argues media expert at launch of new programme Professor of Media Studies delivers inaugural lecture in social media
Last month we launched a new programme in social media with an inaugural lecture by Professor Jos� van Dijck of the University of Amsterdam, who explored how social media will shape our understandings of identity and privacy in the 21st Century.
The following day, a group of media experts convened to discuss issues of regulation, changes to privacy, defamation, and contempt of court laws, and the political economy of social media and its impact on political participation. Read more
