A Great Year for NBCA Volunteer Events!

All we can say is - WOW! Our volunteers are an impressive group.

As we begin our new fiscal year, we want to share with all of you our best year yet for volunteer-led fundraising events. There were eight Stop the Clot events across the country in Los Angeles, CA, Columbia, MD, Littleton, CO, Upper Arlington, OH, Gambier OH, Austin TX, York, PA and New York City. Participants fundraised by reaching out to others to share their blood clot stories and valuable information, and to heighten awareness about the dangers of blood clots. We have also benefitted from golf tournaments in Smyrna, DE, Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Indianapolis, IN, as well as shopping nights, fundraising pages, bar and bat mitzvahs ... there is no end to the creativity and drive of the many people who support us. Overall, these supporters helped to raise over $200,000 to support our mission. It's an amazing accomplishment. Again, our thanks to each and every one of you. We are so grateful for all of the planning and hard work that goes into these great events, and we look forward to seeing even more planned for this year!

Meet the 11 members of the 2014 Team Stop the Clot for the TCS New York City Marathon, most of whom are DVT/PE survivors eager to resume their passion for running while raising funds and awareness for NBCA's important mission. They are already hard at work fundraising and training to run a 26.2 block party through the world's most diverse city! Join us in thanking them and wishing them many great training runs leading up to the big day on November 2.

We would love to count you among our volunteers! If you would like to get more information about planning a fundraising event for NBCA, please contact Judi Elkin at jelkin@stoptheclot.org.

"We must reduce the burden from thrombosis if we are to achieve the World Health Assembly's global target of reducing mortality from premature non-communicable disease by 25 percent by 2025," said Gary Raskob, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Public Health at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, and Chairman of the ISTH World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee. According to Dr. Raskob, who also serves as the Chair of NBCA's Medical and Scientific Advisory Board, "Thrombosis is a common mechanism for the three leading cardiovascular causes of death and a major contributor to non-communicable disease globally."

NBCA applauds the International Society on Thrombosis and Homeostasis (ISTH) for partnering with thrombosis-related organizations from every continent to launch World Thrombosis Day on Monday, October 13. Stay tuned for announcements of upcoming activities. Learn more about World Thrombosis Day here.
Please Help Us Save Lives

Firefighter George Dennis' persistence helped save his life after his first pulmonary embolism was misdiagnosed and his initial DVT was not treated. Read his story here.

George's story, featured in our most recent fundraising appeal, affirms NBCA's commitment to public awareness about the risk factors and signs and symptoms of blood clots. The statistics are startling: One person dies every 6 minutes from a pulmonary embolism (PE). Help us lead the charge to raise awareness by sharing this important information.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to those of you who have already made a contribution and invite those who have yet to give to make a donation today.

She learned the hard way that blood clots can occur from long periods of inactivity such as with extended travel. With the summer travel season in full swing, read Alicia's story  and our Passport to Safety to get valuable information about how you can prevent blood clots when you travel.

Researchers Find New Way to Prevent Dangerous Clots

Eliminating an enzyme known as factor XIII shrinks clots by 50 percent. The discovery could lead to a safer alternative to blood thinners for patients at high risk of deep vein thrombosis. Read more here.
