A Message from our Chief Executive Officer, Joe Isaacs
|
Spring has finally arrived, and it's a very busy time for the National Blood Clot Alliance! As many of you are aware, NBCA is fortunate to be the beneficiary of numerous volunteer-led fundraising events, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank those whose passion for our organization and its mission, and commitment to raising funds and awareness is so impressive. Our walk events continue to grow, popping up across the country from Maryland to Los Angeles to Ohio and Pennsylvania. Our athletes who run marathons and triathlons add fundraising to their already strenuous training programs. Shopping nights, fundraising pages, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, there is no end to the creativity and drive of the many people who support us.
I recently had the pleasure of attending a first-time golf tournament that was held as an NBCA fundraiser in Florida. It was an inspiring reminder of why NBCA's work is so important. I joined in honoring the memory of a special young man, Rob Koziura, whose life ended prematurely at age 31 due to blood clots. The event was entirely planned and implemented by Rob's family. It was an amazing testament to the power of family, friends and love. Together, they extended Rob's legacy as someone who urged others to take blood clot risks seriously. I thank the Koziura family for helping to raise awareness and inviting me to participate in their celebration of Rob. Read more about the event here.
To all of our volunteers, I offer a heartfelt thank you for supporting NBCA.
We are very grateful to each and every one of you.

The "Clot Trot":
Mike Beamesderfer's Story - with help from Ava and Jenna
|
Like so many other patients, Mike Beamesderfer's blood clot came as a complete surprise. "I am familiar with many things with regard to medicine, anatomy and the like, however, I was woefully lacking knowledge in the areas of veins and hematology. As a NASA engineer, the feeling of not knowing, nor understanding what was happening to me, was nearly as unsettling as the pain in my leg." Read Mike's story here.

Know the Facts!
|
There are at least 100,000 deaths in the U.S. annually due to pulmonary embolism (PE). That's at least 274 deaths each day. Someone experiences a PE in this country every minute. Don't be a statistic. Know the symptoms: A PE may cause sharp chest pain and rapid heart rate OR simply an unexplained cough. Ask your doctor if you could be suffering from a blood clot. Get the facts here. Spread the word.
