Featured Patient: Lisa Thomas, Mrs. Rosemount International 2013
Mrs. Rosemount finishes as 4th runner up at the Mrs. Minnesota International Pageant
Our featured patient, Lisa Thomas, holds the title of Mrs. Rosemount and competed in The Mrs. Minnesota International Pageant on March 16.  She was the winner of the photogenic award, and finished as 4th runner up overall.  The pageant showcases the many accomplishments of Minnesota's married women. Their multiple roles of wife, mother, professional and community volunteer are recognized and celebrated.  Each contestant is given the opportunity to select a service platform that she promotes during the year.  We are fortunate that Mrs. Rosemount chose NBCA as her service platform.  In so doing, she hopes to save lives by educating and informing people about deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.   On behalf of the patients we serve, we extend best of luck to Mrs. Rosemount and our deepest gratitude for her ongoing message:   "Are you at risk?  Educating to save lives; Stop the Clot®!"

MARCH:          Brooklyn NY

Thanks to Traci Wilkes Smith and the Association of Black Women Attorneys (ABWA) for helping us wrap up Blood Clot Awareness Month with the 4th Annual 5k Walk in Brooklyn's Prospect Park on March 30.  Right before the Walk, we'll hear from blood clot survivor Morgan Thompson. Morgan's blood clot was caused by a combination of birth control pills, a long plane ride and her treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. And, we'll also hear from Dr. Alex Spyropoulos, Director of Anticoagulation Services and Clinical Thrombosis at North Shore-LIJ Health System at Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Spyropoulos, a blood clot survivor himself, will speak about the signs and symptoms of blood clots.

APRIL:             Gambier OH, Tacoma WA, Apple Valley MN and Littleton CO

On April 6, thanks to Andie Asimes of Kenyon College in Gambier Ohio, the ladies of Zeta Alpha Pi will host a Stop the Clot® 5k Walk / Run in memory of their sorority sister, Anna Frutiger, Class of 2009.  In May 2010, Anna passed away from an undiagnosed Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) which resulted in a Pulmonary Embolism (PE).  Thank you Zeta Alpha Pi for continuing to honor Anna's memory while providing college students with important information about the signs, symptoms and risks of blood clots.

Team Vargo, a group formed by Sarah Vargo, the young widow of Jason Vargo will be hosting events over the next few months to educate, raise awareness and raise funds for the National Blood Clot Alliance in Jason's memory.  Jason passed away last May, just three months after his honorable discharge from the Army where he served four tours in Iraq with the 55th Air Defense Artillery.  The first event will be at  Applebee's in Tacoma WA on April 18. Our thanks to Sarah and Team Vargo for their passionate efforts to raise funds and awareness.

Are you a hardcore Zumba-ite or a Zumba-ite wannabe in the Twin Cities area?  Lisa Thomas aka Mrs. Rosemount International 2013 will bring her Stop the Clot® message to a Zumbathon that she is hosting at Bogarts Place at Apple Place Bowl, 14917 Garrett Avenue in Apple Valley MN.  Join Lisa and lead Zumba instructor, Amanda Steel from Steel Wellness Center in Lakeville MN, on April 21 from noon - 3 pm. Cost is $10 and it's sure to be a sell-out as the space at Bogarts is limited to 150.

Jennifer McLean Brooks will once again honor the memory of her brother Jeff McLean who passed away from bilateral pulmonary embolism in 2002 at age 34.  Jeff was a beloved son, brother, husband and father of two young sons, ages 5 and 1 at the time of his death.  This 2nd Annual  Stop The Clot® Walk will take place on April 28 at Hudson Gardens, in Littleton CO.  Here, we'll hear from Marilyn Manco-Johnson, MD, a Professor of Pediatrics-Hematology/Oncology of the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

MAY:               Sykesville MD, Austin TX and Alma MI

Almost one year ago Paul Zaruba's life changed forever after surviving near fatal blood clots in both lungs.  Since that incident, he has been compelled to learn more about his diagnosis. To this day, doctors still can't determine exactly what caused his blood clots; a diagnosis referred to as an "unprovoked pulmonary embolism."  Paul reached out to NBCA a few months ago wanting to bring blood clot awareness to the Baltimore MD / Washington DC community - and the
Walk to Stop the Clot®in Sykesville was born!  Join us on May 4!

Now in its 3rd year, the Stop the Clot® 5k Fun Run and Walk takes place on May 19 once again at The Reserve at Lake Travis thanks to Kara and Ben King of Austin TX. This spectacular site offers our participants full use of the facilities for the day.... the infinity pool over Lake Travis, the lazy river, the swim-up bar, lake access and the kids swim area. Truly a delightful event that our Austin friends flock to each year!  And, a special shout-out to our 2013 event sponsors including SideCar; Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgeons; Hoboken Pie Pizza; The Comfort Store and Steve Vinklarek
State Farm Agency.

Stop the Clot® with Anna's Team will once again at the Alma Highland Festival's Series of Races on May 25. Thanks to Anna's parents, Drs. Richard Frutiger and Sara Wassenaar, Anna Frutiger's legacy lives on through a variety of blood clot awareness activities throughout the year. Anna loved the Highland Festival and participated as both a highland dancer and a runner in the Highland Festival race for many years.  Please join or support Anna's Team as we honor Anna's life and the Frutiger/Wassenaar family's passion and commitment to educate others about DVT and PE.
