Knowles Science Teaching Foundation 2015 Teaching Fellowships

Valued at approximately $150,000, the prestigious five-year Fellowships are awarded to early-career teachers who are committed to teaching science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics (STEM) in high schools nationwide. The application deadline is 12 a.m. PST on October 29, 2014. "The KSTF Teaching Fellowship Program offers access to a network of professionals dedicated to a common cause-improving math and science education," said Nicole Gillespie, KSTF's Executive Director. "The program has been refined and improved over the past decade, and is highly effective at retaining the most promising beginning teachers, supporting them to become leaders and change agents in the profession." Save the date and submit proposals for CAST 2014 

Save the date: The Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching (CAST) 2014 will be November 20-22nd at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, TX. Early Bird Registration will be open August 15 - October 1 at $125. STAT is calling on all presenters to share their lesson plans and lessons learned with science teachers from across the state of Texas. CAST is an excellent opportunity to present, network with your peers and share knowledge. Join us at CAST 2014 as a presenter by submitting your proposal online.

To help create a community of K-12 STEM Outreach providers, supporters, educators and organizations, regional listservs have been created.  These groups are all about sharing resources, information, events, volunteers, needs, and more with others reaching out to K12 students aiming to excite them about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).  Join whichever group(s) make sense for you and start collaborating, connecting, communicating and sharing!

 

For those not in one of these areas who still want to receive information going out to all groups, join the Texas K-12 STEM Outreach group.

Amazon's new TenMarks math app makes Kindle debut
TenMarks, the math instruction company acquired by Amazon last year, released its first app for Amazon's Kindle platform, and said its summer math program, normally $39/student, will now be available for free. The release of TenMarks Math for Students for Kindle Fire tablets is a new step by Amazon into the educational market. Read more.
 
Last year, girls make up 18.5% of AP computer science test-takers nationwide, a slight decrease from the year before. In three states, no girls took the test at all. Natalie Rusk is a research scientist at the MIT Media Lab who helped develop Scratch, an open-source programming platform where kids can code games and animation and then share projects and how-to tips. She thinks the next two years will determine whether coding can start to close the gender gap. Read more.

San Antonio Prefreshman Engineering Program
San Antonio Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP) is a four-year mathematics-based summer program of approximately 7 to 8 weeks in duration. PREP promotes abstract reasoning and critical thinking skills in students, combining their prior learning with new advanced concepts for solving problems and that are hands-on and relevant!
