Videos Explore the Science Behind the NewsThe National Science Foundation and NBC Learn recently released several new, educational videos in the Science Behind the News series. The series of twelve videos explores the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics behind current events. These videos, along with many others, are available for free to students, teachers, and the general public at Science360: The Knowledge Network Science360: The Knowledge Network and NBCLearn.com. http://science360.gov/series/Science+Behind+The+News/61d449d4-c651-4109-992b-3c372db490d3 (From the Triangle Coalition - TC STEM Education News, 3/14/13) Education Data Show Gender Gap in Career PreparationThe National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education, National Coalition on Women, Jobs and Job Training released a summary of its analysis of education data titled, Education Data Show Gender Gap in Career Preparation. The Coalition's research revealed the following: - More than 40 years after Title IX outlawed sex segregation in education, women and girls are still sorely underrepresented in CTE programs that are nontraditional for their gender.
- Women and girls remain concentrated in CTE courses that provide training for traditionally female, low-paying fields
- Women and girls' participation in CTE programs that prepare them for high-skill, high-wage, and high-demand jobs is critical to ensuring their economic security and to closing the wage gap.
- Traditionally male occupations pay far more than traditionally female occupations. CTE programs prepare too many girls and young women for these low-paying, predominately female jobs.
- The upcoming reauthorization of the Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act provides an ideal opportunity to reduce occupational segregation by promoting training for women and girls in high-skill, high-demand and high-wage jobs.
- While the nontraditional measure is essential to closing the gender gap in CTE, failures in implementation and enforcement of the data reporting requirement undermine its effectiveness.
