CHURCH LIFE AT SAINT PETER'S
November 19-29, 2015

'Way back in the summer of 1973, after the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod's New Orleans convention declared a number of us "not to be tolerated in the Church of God," several of my seminary classmates and I began using The Beginning is Coming to describe that particular point in our life.  We knew what had past.  We knew that we had a future; but we had no idea what that future would be.

The Beginning is Coming is a near perfect statement of where we are liturgically and parochially on the Last Sunday after Pentecost, also known as Christ the King Sunday.  Through the readings God reminds us of our past and promises us a future, but we are not there yet; the beginning is coming.  Given all that is happening in the Church, the city and the world these days, affirming that the beginning is coming seems a good place to be.

This is the Sunday we will welcome our new Cantor, Blint Karosi; and so "the beginning is coming" is a good way to describe our parish life too.  With Blint's arrival, God opens a new volume of Saint Peter's story.  With you and many others, I am very anxious to see how that story will proceed.  These are going to be very exciting days.

Blint will introduce himself to us with the following music this Sunday:

Prelude:    Two Processionals for Trumpet and Organ - Blint Karosi (b. 1979)
Postlude:   Prelude and Fugue in G Major BWV 541 -  J. S. Bach
Anthems:
King of All ages, throned on high - Paul Isom (b. 1959)
    With Delight Sing Praise - G. F. Handel (1685-1759)
Hymns:
Entrance                416  At the Name of Jesus
of the Day:            435   Lo! He comes with cloud descending
    Sending                 434  Jesus shall reign

"The beginning is coming," faithful people of Saint Peter's.  And this is quite a start!

Welcome to our new cantor
This Sunday, November 22, we welcome as our new Cantor Blint Karosi, an award-winning Hungarian composer, concert organist, and recording artist.

Prior to this appointment, he had served as Minister of Music at the First Lutheran Church of Boston for eight years, where he founded and directed the acclaimed "Boston Bach Birthday," a daylong celebration of the composer's birthday, co-sponsored by the Boston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and other art organizations in Boston. The festival gained significant media attention under his management, including live broadcasts on WGBH Classical New England, and featured many world-renowned performers. He also established First Lutheran's own Bach Vespers, a series of cantata performances in a worship setting on period instruments, and co-founded Antico Moderno, an ensemble dedicated to commission and perform new works for period players. (Antico Moderno's New York debut is scheduled at Saint Peter's in May 2016.)

Blint has completed the academic portion of his doctoral studies in composition at Yale University. He holds a Master's degree and an Artist Diploma from the Oberlin Conservatory, two Master's degrees from the Liszt Academy in Budapest (in clarinet and organ performance), and two Prix de Virtuosits from the Conservatoire Suprieur de Genve in Switzerland. He has taught at Yale University, Boston University, the University of Massachusetts Boston and the Oberlin Conservatory. He regularly gives masterclasses and concerts in the United States and in Europe, and is under concert management with Penny Lorenz.

Breakfast Program

This past Monday night, our breakfast crew prepared a spectacular, fresh and homemade egg dish with onions and peppers and served it Tuesday morning along with homemade pancakes to 112 guests.  The food was marvelous!  The guests were about as happy and thankful as I've ever seen them and the "breakfast crew" were all truly delighted.

Don't' take my word for this:  Ask Marisa or David, Adam or James, Thomas (a brand new member) or Bruce or Watson and notice this picture.  Our Breakfast Program crew will gladly tell you about what they get out of serving those in need.  Consider joining them!
