CHURCH LIFE AT SAINT PETER'S
May 7-17, 2015

Alleluia!  Christ is risen!  Christ is risen indeed, Alleluia!

Here beginneth the 40 day events celebrating Tom Schmidt's 25 year ministry as Cantor at Saint Peter's Church:

RACHMANINOFF'S ALL-NIGHT VIGIL

MAY 9, 2015, 4:00 PM AT SAINT PETER'S CHURCH

Freewill offering  /  Reception following the concert

Written in a two-week period in 1915 (a similar feat to Handel writing the Messiah), Rachmaninoff's setting of 15 texts from the All-Night Vigil of the Orthodox Church are considered his greatest composition and also the greatest accomplishment in history of Orthodox Church musical settings.

Since instruments were not allowed by the Orthodox Church, Rachmaninoff wrote for unaccompanied choir, however freely "orchestrating" the voices as though they were a large instrumental group, with the sopranos, altos, tenors and basses each breaking into two or three parts, making for a vocal texture that has as many as 10 pitches sounding at once. It is well known for its use of low bass notes, with the basses often descending to low D and C, and twice to low B-flat!

This piece was not recorded until 1965 in Russia, and even that was not made available in the west until later. So audiences have only begun to hear this major work since the 1970s and 80s on a wide scale. The 1992 Musica Russica edition has made the work accessible for western choirs, with the text in the original Cyrillic-letter Church Slovanic (a type of old Russian) as well as in a transliteration in the Roman alphabet with an easy pronunciation guide.

Conductor Thomas Schmidt is presenting this work as his parting gift to Saint Peter's Church as he retires from the position of Cantor after 25 years because of his love for the spirituality expressed by Russian Orthodox music. It will be sung by Saint Peter's Choir (30 voices) and the Long Island Symphonic Choral Association (75 voices), both of which are directed by Dr. Schmidt.

This Sunday, May 10 is the Sixth Sunday of Easter and the 36th day of Easter's Fifty Days.  On this day our crucified and risen Lord will remind us that he is to us and we are through him to one another both friends and lovers.
