November 20-30, 2014
News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

This Sunday is the final Sunday of our Church's annual liturgical cycle.  For 51 weeks our regular Sunday liturgies have been shaped by the Gospel according to Saint Matthew.   Beginning on November 30, the Gospel according to Saint Mark will shape us on our way.   This Sunday we hear Jesus' final parable in Matthew 25, "you did it to me,"  how the God who gathers, nourishes and dignifies us as if we were Jesus Christ intends for us to gather, welcome and dignify others; a power-filled way to complete this year.   On this Sunday, the Last Sunday after Pentecost, also known as Christ the King Sunday, we welcome the following new members at each liturgy:

Katherine Clark

Andrew Hartman

Kate Koenig

Daniel Molina

Caroline Schneider

Lauren Sevian

Karytza Vergara

Where are they?

Seminarian Kevin Farrar is with his family  in California for Thanksgiving.

Dr. Thomas Schmidt is at Grace Lutheran Church, River Forest, Il as guest organist for their monthly Bach series.

Next week's News and Notes will be sent on Monday.  In it we'll prepare you for Advent with a link to devotional materials from the presiding bishops of the ELCA, Episcopal Church USA, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada and Primate of the Anglican Church in Canada; with an overview of the "year of Mark" beginning November 30 and a reminder of Advent arrangements and themes.

There will be no Midtown Manhattan Thanksgiving Service next week, a 79 year tradition, because of the lack of clergy interest.

With my colleagues at Central Synagogue, I am disappointed.

There will be no 6:00 p.m. mass on Wednesday, November 26.

SAINT PETER'S CHURCH building and all programs will be closed from Wednesday, November 26 through Saturday, November 29 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Peace and Joy,

  Derr

ELCA'S MESSAGE ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

The ELCA Church Council has authorized a social message on gender-based violence.  Messages are adopted by the Church Council as a means to encourage learning and moral discourse. The tentative timeline calls for a message, or messages, to be considered by the Church Council in April of 2015.

A Draft of a Social Message on Gender-based Violence is available for public comment and response. Please use either the online feedback form or the printable feedback form. The comment period runs through November 26th, and you are invited to participate by sending your feedback by email.

BREAKFAST PROGRAM

LAST TUESDAY, volunteers, including Watson Bosler, Bruce Johnson, Adam Stone, James Pfister and David and Marisa Lohse prepared and served pancakes, Canadian bacon, frittatas and other breakfast goodies to 138 guests.  The meal was served fresh, hot and on-time!  Thank God for all our volunteers!

On the basis of current attendees, we expect to provide Breakfast for more than 8,000 people in 2015.  The number of those in need continues to rise each year.   Many of these are underserved veterans of our Mideast wars.  We regularly run out of food.  Donations to Saint Peter's Church, memo "Breakfast Program" are sorely needed.

This past Tuesday, 138 guests were served at our Breakfast Program.

6,523 guests have been served thus far in 2014.

7,955 guests were served in 2013.

7,643 people were served in 2012.

To serve in our Tuesday morning Breakfast Program simply show up between 6:45 and 7:15 on Tuesday morning or, for more details, speak with Pastor Derr and he'll connect you with one of our members who regularly serves.
