News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

Of the eight Sundays between now and Advent, three - Saint Luke the Physician (October 19), Reconciliation/Reformation (October 26) and All Saints (November 2) - are festivals.  The other five, beginning this Sunday, are shaped by Gospel readings from the 21st through 25th chapters of Matthew's Gospel.  Matthew records Jesus as saying these words on the day after his entry into Jerusalem and his cleansing of the Temple.  All are words of judgment addressed to Jesus' opponents who get "the last word" at Jesus' trial and crucifixion.

Or so it seems.

It is increasingly important to note that those Jesus addresses also oppose the inclusion of Matthew's community of believers within the wider Jewish community of the 80's C.E. and that much of the rancor in these passages reflects that internal Jewish community struggle for the legitimacy of a "Christian" community within Judaism and does not represent a historic Jewish diatribe against Jesus.  Understanding this context is crucial to hearing the Gospel and avoiding the anti-Semitism of previous eras.  To help us better understand these, Dr. Helen Goodkin will present "The Parables of Matthew's Gospel" at our 10:00 a.m. forums on October 12 and 19.

As to the last word each Sunday, God has it:  Resurrection!

This Sunday is the Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost and the image of the People of God as God's vineyard is prominent.  Our cantor, Dr. Schmidt and his wife will be away this week visiting his daughter, son-in-law and grandson in Seattle.  At 8:45 and 11:00, our own James Pfister will be the organist.  At 11:00, the choir will be directed by our own Eric Stewart.  At 11:00, the prelude and postlude will be played by Johannes Landgren, professor of organ and improvisation at the University of Music and Drama, University of Gteborg

  • 8:45 a.m.    Mass  I  will preside and preach.
  • 10:00 a.mForum:  Dr. Dennis Raverty will continue his fascinating series begun last week on Reformation-Counter Reformation Art.  This week's discussion is on Bernini and Rubens.

NEXT SUNDAY, October 12 is the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost.  The image for the Reign of God  (Matthew:  Kingdom of Heaven) this Sunday is a royal wedding banquet.

THIS SUNDAY IN MUSIC
This Sunday, as every Sunday, is a great one for music-lovers.  At our 11:00 a.m. service, our guest organist comes all the way from Gteborg, Sweden.  Johannes Landgren, professor of organ and improvisation at Gteborg School of Music, will play the prelude and postlude for us.

At out 5:00 p.m. service, Jazz 4 All starts up again and plays for our liturgy for the first time.  Read below to learn more.

And, just in case that wasn't enough, our Director of Music for Jazz Ministry, Ike Sturm, will be performing during the Feast of Saint Francis/Blessing of the Animals service at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine.  He'll be there along with saxophonist Paul Winter.  If you're uptown on Sunday morning, stop in and enjoy the service, which ends with the Procession of the Animals AND an outdoor fair.

JAZZ 4 ALL BEGINS THIS WEEKEND

This Sunday, October 5, Jazz 4 All will be performing at the 5:00 p.m. Jazz Vespers for the first time.  Jazz 4 All is a group of volunteer singers, instrumentalists and dancers that come together to listen and improvise with one another.  We gather and rehearse the first Sunday of every month directly after the 5pm service in the sanctuary and all ages and experience levels are welcome!  For this first service, we have set Psalm 80 to John Coltrane's powerful blues, "Equinox."

NEXT SUNDAY IN MUSIC
Glasgow Academy

Next Sunday, October 12, is a big day at Saint Peter's with a number of special guests providing some fantastic music for us.

At the 11:00 a.m. service, be prepared to listen to the bagpipes and drums of Scotland's Glasgow Academy, truly a treat to have.  At our 5:00 p.m. service, we'll be honoring one of our own, Gene Bertoncini, at our annual All Nite Soul jazz celebration.  Keep reading for more info on both of these musical celebrations that will take place next weekend:

The decision to found The Glasgow Academy was taken in May 1845 by members of the newly-formed Free Church of Scotland.  The school building was formally opened in the centre of the city on 5th May 1847 but in 1878 The Academy moved to its current site at Kelvinbridge.  The school has remained in the West End through turbulent times: the First World War touched every part of The Academy, with teachers and pupils going abroad to fight.  In 1919 the War Memorial Trust was established to take over ownership of the school and to commemorate those who had served and fallen in the War.  The Academy's brave tradition of military service was then repeated in the Second World War, sadly producing another high death toll amongst those connected to the school.

Since then, The Academy has seen altogether more positive changes.  The merger with Westbourne School for Girls in 1991 turned The Academy into a co-educational school.  Further mergers have followed as The Academy has extended its borders beyond Kelvinbridge and the long-established but often extended playing fields at Anniesland.  Atholl Preparatory School in Milngavie and Dairsie House School in Newlands are now part of The Academy community.  A brand new Preparatory School building on the Kelvinbridge site opened in April 2008.  The school now educates 1250 children from Nursery/Kindergarten up to S6.

Music is one of The Academy's strengths and the school has four full-time music staff teaching music to children of all ages.  There are currently 500 instrumental lessons taking place each week taught by 23 music tutors.  Instruments taught range from violin to flute, oboe, clarinet and on to accordion and bagpipes.  There are many music ensembles in the school which rehearse on a weekly basis.  The youngest group is the year 4 choir, moving up to the Senior School Concert Band and the Pipes and Drums of The Glasgow Academy.  Music is taught in a purpose-built music building housing classrooms, small tutor rooms and a performance room which seats 50 and houses a Yamaha Concert Grand Piano.

DID YOU CATCH US IN THE NEW YORK TIMES?
Vincent Piazza, who plays Lucky Luciano on HBO's Boardwalk Empire, likes to stop by Saint Peter's for jazz vespers when he has a free Sunday - he gave us a great shout-out in his interview!

A NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF MEDIA
You may have noticed that we're making some changes in our A/V setup in the sanctuary and throughout the plaza level recently. Please bear with us as we attempt to improve our sound and video service. If you notice any issues, please let me or Bryan (at the sound desk) know what you're experiencing so we can address it. Thanks for your patience! -- James

THIS MONTH IN ART
Juliette Conroy - Cathedral (Part 1)
On view in the Narthex through November 10, 2014

Fine-art photographer Juliette Conroy was born in London. As a teenager she relocated to Perth, Australia where she studied art, design and photography at the West Australian Institute of Technology. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

In her art, Juliette uses the camera not to faithfully record the subject but rather to create a distortion, an organic wave of shape and color, through selective focus, indistinct images and cropping. The result is an image that, like a memory, is as much about feeling as seeing.

The project Cathedral started with documenting the life cycle of one plant in her Brooklyn garden over the course of a single year; from the first signs of life in early spring through summer and fall and finally to winter's decay. These images are the bases for a number of works dealing with the ancient, yet ever-relevant themes of cycles, seasons, color and light.
