Saint Peter's Church
August 28-September 7, 2014
News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

This Sunday, August 31, is the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost.  It is also the last Sunday of our summer hiatus.  Our new program year begins this coming week.  (See below).

The Gospel (Saint Matthew 16:21-28) for this Sunday marks a turning point:  Gathered with the disciples at the most northern point of Galilee, Jesus "turns his face toward Jerusalem" to lead all to new life through his cross.  Today at 11:00 we send Seminarian Nancy Rakoczy from Saint Peter's to begin her seminary intern year at Advent Lutheran Church, Broadway at 93rd Street with Pastor Elise Brown.  Joining us for the first time will be Seminarian Kevin Farrar who begins his Yale Divinity School internship year on this day.

  •   8:45 a.m.    Mass:  I will preside and preach.
  • 10:00 a.m.   NO Forum until September 7
  • 11:00 a.m.    Mass:  I will preside and preach.
  • 12:30 p.m.   NO Brunch until September 14
  •   1:30 p.m.   Misa:  Pastor Fabian Arias will preside and preach.
  •   5:00 p.m.   Jazz Vespers:  Vicar Joseph Schattauer-Paille will preside and I will preach.

Next Sunday, we return to our use of setting five at the 11:00 a.m. mass and to Ike Sturm's setting of Jazz Vespers at 5:00 p.m.

SIGN UP TO SERVE

  • LITURGICAL ASSISTANTS:  The September 2014 Sign up is now on the Intersection.
  • BRUNCH MAKERSThe sign up form for Brunch makers is now on the Intersection.

  • Beginning September 14, the suggested donation for Brunch will be $8.00 for brunch and $2.00 for wine.

BEGINNING ANEW

Because September 1 is the earliest date Labor Day can occur and many are not quite ready for this pleasant summer to end, we are going to roll gradually into our new program year.  This is what we mean:

On Sunday, September 7:

There will be a 10:00 a.m. Forum (see below)

The choir will not sing at 11:00 a.m.

We will not serve Brunch.

Beginning Schedules:

  • The Program Cabinet will meet in the Plaza Room at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2014.
  • Our Wednesday  6:00 p.m.  Mass for Peace in the Chapel resumes on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 followed immediately at 7:00 p.m. by our Wednesday Study.  A light supper is served.
  • The first subject of this year's Wednesday Studies will be Paul Invents Christianity, led by Pastor Derr, a five-week course ending October 8, 2014.
  • The Choir will have its first rehearsal in the Music Room at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2014.

 Where are they?

Pastor Jared Stahler is on vacation from August 22 through September 5.

We conclude this glorious summer and begin our new Year of Grace with this prayer:

For all that has been, thanks.  For all that will be, YES!

Enjoy the holiday!

Peace and Joy,

  Derr

MEET THE MEMBERS

Meet Adam Stone, member of Saint Peter's since 2013.

Outside of church, Adam works at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, part of the CUNY system, as the college registrar. He enjoys working in higher education, especially with a diverse body of students, faculty, and staff. In his free time, he plays piano and organ.

Here at Saint Peter's, Adam is part of the Parish Council, serves on the Chapel Conservation Committee and the Membership Development Committee, sings in the choir, and helps with bread baking, along with liturgical duties like serving as deacon.

What brought Adam and his partner James to Saint Peter's? "We were looking for a faith community that is truly welcoming. We found it at Saint Peter's during our first visit and never left. Saint Peter's is indeed a special place."

Speak to Adam to learn more about any of the causes he helps with.

Want to be featured in Meet the Members? Please send your name, picture, Saint Peter's involvement, and some fun facts about you to Jennifer at [email protected] and we'll include it in an upcoming edition!  No matter how young or old, individual or family - we want to meet you!

SERVE ON THE PARISH COUNCIL

Are you, or someone you know at Saint Peter's, interested in serving on the Parish Council?

Each summer, the Nominating Committee works to secure the names of congregational members interested in serving as a member of the Parish Council, usually for a full three year term.  The Committee then emails a questionnaire to each person, and sets a time, usually in early September, for interviews.  Please contact any member of the Committee with suggested names, including your own!  They are Jack Anderson; Gloria Biegler; Dorothy Goldman; John Mostenan; and Watson Bosler, chair

JOIN THE COMMUNITY LIFE COMMITTEE

The Congregational Life Committee is welcoming new members this year!

We are a group dedicated to creating and enhancing fellowship opportunities outside of the worship experience.  Our committee meets several times throughout the year to organize both small and large group events such as book discussions, movie viewings, museum outings, walking and tasting tours, the Hanging of the Greens party, artist's talks, Carnival!, and much more with the goal of bringing friendship, community and fellowship to members of all the congregations at Saint Peter's Church.

There will be an open meeting of our committee on Sunday, September 21st at 1:15 PM in the Plaza Room for everyone who is interested. Please stop in and share your thoughts and ideas for activities/events, - any level of contribution is welcome.  Contact chair Tracy Christensen anytime with your questions: [email protected].  We look forward to new faces and new ideas!
