News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

This Sunday, August 17, is the Tenth Sunday after Pentecost.  As the Sunday closest to August 15, this is the Sunday we celebrate the Day of MARY, MOTHER OF GOD.  Led by Mary and in the company of numberless saints, including those whose deaths we are mourning in these days, we raise our voices to magnify and praise our God.

  • 10:00 a.m.    Kit Kreilick  leads another one of her wonderful fora on the History of Saint Peter's Church.
  • 11:00 a.m.    Mass:  Pastor Stahler will preside and I will preach.
  • 12:30 p.m.   NO Brunch until September 14.
  •  1:30 p.m.    Misa:  Pastor Gus Vinajeras will preside and preach.
  •  5:00 p.m.    Jazz Vespers:  Pastor Stahler will preside and preach.

Next Sunday, August 24, is the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost and the Day of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle.

  • 8:45 a.m.      Mass:  I will preside and preach.
  • 10:00 a.m.    No forum.
  • 11:00 a.m.    Mass:  I will preside and preach.
  • 12:30 p.m.   No Brunch until September 14.

Transitions

Since mid-July, we've had the bittersweet task of saying Farewell and Godspeed to several members and colleagues:

  • Carol Schneider, Candidate for Roster Ministry, whose last Sunday as our vicar was last week and who, in September will begin a Residency at chaplain at Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn;
  • Nicholas Sollom, Candidate for Roster Ministry, concludes his internship with Pastor Eric Olsen at Good Shepherd Church and School, Plainview, Long Island and begins Residency in the VA Hospital system in New York;
  • Seminarian Joe Brewer completed his Clinic Pastoral Education this summer and returns for a third and final year of seminary at Yale Divinity School;
  • Seminarian John Keogh, who continues to be nurtured in the faith at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and at Hope Lutheran Church, Seldon, Long Island, New York;
  • And at the 11:00 a.m. mass on Sunday, August 31 we will send Seminarian Nancy Rakoczy, attending Union Theological Seminary,  to begin her internship with Pastor Elise Brown at Advent Lutheran Church her in Manhattan.

Beginning this week, we will begin to welcome new colleagues in ministry with us:

  • Our new vicar, Joseph Schattauer Paille, a 2014 graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, will begin full time internship at Saint Peter's on Monday, August 17 and will be installed as our vicar on Sunday, September 14, 2014.
  • Seminarian Kevin Farrer, a third year seminarian at Yale Divinity School, will begin his part-time internship with Saint Peter's on September 7 and will be installed as seminary field worker on Sunday, September 21.

Where are they?

Pastor Arias is on vacation in Argentina through the end of August.

Ike Sturm is on tour.
Jack Anderson and George Dorris are spending August on a cruise of the Norwegian fjords followed by a week in London.

The pink roses at the font this Sunday are given by Christopher & Karytza Vergara in thanksgiving for their mother's successful surgery and in gratitude for all who pray for those who struggle with breast cancer.

Peace and Joy,

  Derr

MEET THE MEMBERS

 Meet Nancy MacLeod, member of Saint Peter's since 1997.

During the week she works at Citigroup, supporting the Corporate Accounting Policy Group.  She is also a senior member of the School of Practical Philosophy, which she has been attending for over 30 years.  Nancy credits the school with leading her back to church.  She recently participated in a retreat at Wallkill with the school.  She lives in Brooklyn Heights with her 3 cats.

At Saint Peter's you'll regularly see Nancy serving as a Worship Assistant (including sacristan, communion assistant and deacon duties).  She is also a member of the Liturgical Cabinet, Congregational Life committee, Creative Proclamations and Voices of Saint Peter's.

Speak to Nancy to learn more about any of the causes she helps with.

SERVE ON THE PARISH COUNCIL

Are you, or someone you know at Saint Peter's, interested in serving on the Parish Council?

A NEW MUSICAL
BOOK BY LAURA PEDERSEN
MUSIC AND LYRICS BY CHARLES BLOOM
DIRECTED BY LUDOVICA VILLAR-HAUSER

It's 1979 and progress is about to land on everybody's doorstep, sometimes gently and other times with a giant thud. Not all members of the Price family feel the same about what change means, but by the time they acknowledge that the landscape has shifted, it may already be too late to save their way of life.

Starting in the 1930s right through the 1980s, a quiet shift was taking place - family-owned farms began to slowly disappear from the American landscape.  They were replaced by huge malls, housing developments, or absorbed by larger commercial enterprises. The vanishing of America's farming community serves as the inspiration for This Will All Be Yours, a new musical with book by playwright and former New York Times columnist Laura Pedersen and music and lyrics by Charles Bloom.  THIS WILL ALL BE YOURS is one of the featured shows of The 2014 Midtown International Theatre Festival.
