News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

About the time you receive this e-letter, a significant number of us will be gathered with other lay leaders, deacons, associates in ministry and pastors of the Metropolitan New York Synod for our annual Synod Assembly.  While other important matters are on the agenda, the central matter is the election of our bishop.  In this matter, I am asking you to pray very specifically for the (re) election of Bishop Robert A. Rimbo who is a candidate for re-election so that he can finish leading our synod in the implementation of one of the most promising possibilities in the last 20 years, our synod's Claimed, Gathered and Sent strategic plan which is now in its initial implementation stage.  This plan is on an early and therefore fragile trajectory to provide fiscal stability for our synod and at the same time stabilize and strengthen the ministries of our congregations, many of which are struggling.

Since I've been in this synod (nearly 17 years), we have had to close over 30 congregations; we have sold their property and, until recently, used the income from those properties  to cover the synod's operating costs.  In the six years Bishop Rimbo and his team have been leading us, we have developed a strategic plan, put in place norms for congregational viability and accountability, cut expense by 1/3.  There are strategic plans, partnerships and ways for funding with accountability for the funding's use in place - and an incredible team of synod staff in place - to reverse this national and ecumenical trend.  None of the other candidates for bishop have played a role in the planning or implementing of the synod's strategic plan which has been overwhelmingly endorsed by several consecutive  synod assemblies.  My experience tells me this is a golden once-per-generation opportunity.  So I'm asking that, over the next three days, you pray for the affirmation of Bishop Rimbo's ministry, the team he has assembled - which includes Maria Del Toro, the synod's Vice President; Christopher Vergara, Kathy Schmidt, Ed Wagner, Jonathan Linman and, both officially (and unofficially), Pastors Stahler, Eschen and me and also affirms our strategic plan by this synod assembly.   You can do this by asking God to send the Holy Spirit on the assembly and all the voting members. This is an extraordinary request, but these are extraordinary times.  Please make this your most fervent prayer in these next three days.  We'll tell you the news on Sunday.

Last week I missed asking your thanks for two other members of Saint Peter's involved in the ministries of the "wider Church": Jennifer Vizina and Jackie Mize-Baker, both actively serving on the Seafarers and International House Board.
