EASTER
News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

Gracious God, through the resurrection of your Son you gave life and freedom to the whole world.  Continue to give these gifts to your people, O Lord, that they may walk in perfect freedom and advance to eternal life; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen

For generations, this is how the people of God prayed on Easter Monday, rejoicing that "for freedom Christ has set us free," and understanding that freedom is one of the first gifts of Christ's resurrection.

While our regular weekly News & Notes will be sent on Thursday, there are several persons we need to thank and several matters we need to know immediately.

  1. Our regular Wednesday Study will resume next Wednesday, April 30 and conclude June 4.  We will be completing our series "The Lively Use of the Bible" by focusing on the relationship between the prophets and the rulers of Israel and Judah between 850 BCE and 150 BCE: NEXT Wednesday, April 30 at 7:00 p.m.
  2. The Choir rehearses on Thursday, April 24, at 6:15 p.m.
  3. The Adult Education and Enrichment Committee meets on Thursday, April 24 at 7:00 p.m.
  4. Yom HaShoah, our annual commemoration of the Holocaust is, this year, at Central Synagogue on Monday, April 28 at 6:00 p.m.  This will be Rabbi Rubinstein's last service with us as Central Synagogue's Senior Rabbi.  He retires in June.

 Pastor Damm wishes to thank everyone who sent him Easter greetings - he is not sending any cards but very much appreciated the good wishes and prayers you sent.

And, having visited the others to whom you sent cards, I can also report that they are grateful to you for your prayers also...and your cards are all on prominent display!

This Friday, April 25, is the Day of Saint Mark the Evangelist and also is the Fifth Anniversary of the Ordination of Mark E. Erson - former member (and Congregational President) of Saint Peter's and founder of Creative Proclamations - to the ordained ministry of Word and Sacraments.  Rejoice with Mark on this day!  You can send Mark at note of congratulations to

This coming Sunday, April 27 is the Second Sunday of Easter.  The risen Christ appears among the frozen disciples as peace giver and faith strengthener.

  • At  8:45 a.m. Pastor Stahler will preside and preach.
  • At 10:00 a.m., Kit Kreilick will present the next in her "History of Saint Peter's" series.
  • At 11:00 a.m., our choir will sing and Dance@SaintPeters will dance  J.S. Bach's Cantata #4, "Christ Jesus lay in death's strong bands ."  I will preside and Pastor Stahler will preach.
  • Brunch will be presented by Betty Jackson.
  • At 1:15 p.m., on the 3rd floor, the Non-Fiction Book Group meets to discuss Zealot, by Reza Asian.
  • At 1:30 p.m., Pastor Arias will preside and preach.
  • At 5:00 p.m., Vicar Carol Schneider will preside and I will preach for Jazz Vespers with musical leaders Taylor Haskins and Fuzzy Logic.

Appointed for this day, Psalm 16 encourages us to renewed and faithful living:

Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you

I have said to the LORD, "You are my Lord, my good above all other."

All my delight is in the godly that are in the land,

upon those who are noble among the people.

O LORD, you are my portion and my cup;

it is you who uphold my lot.

My boundaries enclose a pleasant land;

indeed, I have a rich inheritance.

I will bless the LORD who gives me counsel;

my heart teaches me night after night.

I have set the LORD always before me;

because God is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices;

my body also shall rest in hope.

For you will not abandon me to the grave

nor let your holy one see the pit.

You will show me the path of life

in your presence there is fullness of joy,

and in your right hand are pleasures for- evermore.

Alleluia!  Christ is risen!

Peace and Joy,

  Derr

THANK YOU

THANKS BE TO GOD and THANK YOU to all those who worked so hard to make our praise of God for Christ's Passion and Resurrection so rich.  We are deeply grateful to our Directors of Music, Composer in Residence, soloists and musicians; Creative Proclamations; Dance@SaintPeters and Liturgical Assisting Ministers who are named in our liturgy folders.  Here, however, I want to give God particular thanks and acknowledge those listed below who serve in the background, whose work is quiet , yet crucial and who mostly go unmentioned an unnoticed.  Without them, we could not do well any of the things we do and we give thanks to God for  their dedication and commitment:
