Saint Peter's Church
March 6-16, 2014
News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

Our forty-day journey from Promise to Promise -- this week from garden to garden -- has begun.  The people of Saint Peter's have produced several resources to aid each of us on our journey.

Lenten video reflections, planned and produced by our own Christopher Vergara, involving a significant number of our talented people and using traditional texts, are e-mailed weekly.

On Wednesday evenings, from March 12 through April 2, we continue our now 11-year-old tradition of 6:00 p.m. vespers, light supper and 7:00 p.m. presentation with our sisters and brothers of the Roman Catholic communion.  Our partner this year is the Roman Catholic Church of Our Saviour at Park and 38th Street.  Next Wednesday, March 12, at Our Saviour's, Paul J. Murray on "Sacrosanctum Concilium & Liturgical Music."

Prayers around the Cross at 5:00 p.m. each Sunday offers a unique jazz liturgical experience I urge each of you to make use of at least once during these 40 days.

Our Sunday masses provide us with nourishment, companionship, direction and destination.

This Sunday, March 9, is the First Sunday in Lent.  Emphasizing and giving substance to our journey, each mass begins with the Great Litany sung in procession.

  • At  8:45 a.m., I will preside and preach
  • At 10:00 a.m., our Forum will be gathered by Pastor Stahler around the Cross.
  • At 11:00 a.m., Pastor Stahler will preside and I will preach
  • At 12:30 p.m., Brunch is presented by Susan, Pat, and Ian (aka "the Gartizmonrodes")
  • At 1:30 p.m., Pastor Arias will preside and preach.
  • At 5:00 p.m., Prayers around the Cross will be led by Pastor Stahler with music by the Mike Holober Quintet.

Next Sunday, March 16, is the Second Sunday in Lent.

  • At  8:45 a.m., Pastor Stahler will preside and preach
  • At 10:00 a.m., our Forum will be gathered by Pastor Stahler around the Cross
  • At 11:00 a.m., Pastor Stahler will preside and preach
  • At 12:30 p.m., Brunch is presented by Kevin Kunkle
  • At 1:30 p.m., Pastor Arias will preside and preach
  • At 5:00 p.m., Prayers around the Cross will be led by Pastor Stahler with music by Webster Groves Band featuring Kenny Werner.

One of our members is in need of assistance with shopping about 2 hours per week every other week.  If you can help, please contact me

Peace and Joy,

  Derr

LENTEN JAZZ VESPERS
Prayer around the Cross: gathered to the heart of God

Throughout Lent, Jazz Vespers will follow a rite called "Prayer around the Cross." Expertly crafted by liturgist Susan Briehl for Holden Village, an ELCA retreat center and community in Washington State, the rite will be adapted with Saint Peter's treasured jazz idiom. Jazz Vesper's hallmark visiting bands will play reflections on several readings, and Ike Sturm, director of music for jazz, will be joined by vocalists Chanda Rhule and Melissa Stylianou to lead liturgical singing.

The liturgy culminates in an invitation to approach the cross, to gather at the heart of God in prayer and to light a candle. We will assemble on the floor of the Sanctuary six modular candle votives (given by Maria del Toro and Stan Rustin and designed by Vignelli Design) in the shape of a cross.

If you have participated in this rite before, or if it is entirely new to you; if you are a regular at Jazz Vespers, or if you've never been -- you are especially invited to participate in this liturgy for Lent. March 9, 16, 23, 30 and April 6 at 5:00 P.M.

EDUCATION AND ENRICHMENT

Lenten Vespers and Study

On Wednesday evenings of Lent (March 12-April 2) we will continue, for the 11th year, our tradition of joining our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters for 6:00 p.m. vespers and light supper followed by 7:00 p.m. study.  On March 12 & 19 we will meet at the Church of Our Saviour, Park Avenue at 38th Street.  On March 26 & April 2 we will meet at Saint Peter's.  On the final Wednesday of Lent (April 9) we will continue our other Lenten tradition and join the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, York Avenue and 74th Street, to pray Tenebrae together with our choirs.  Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

UPDATED www.saintpeters.org!

These past few months a web programming company has been working to make updates to Saint Peter's website, focusing on optimization for social media and ease of management. Over the course of the next few week's we'll highlight here some of the new features.

We consistently hear that there are so many different places to go, people to call and websites to visit to get connected to Saint Peter's Church. With the upgraded website, simply click CONNECT (see the screen shot with the orange highlight, below). And from there you'll see all the various ways of connecting to Saint Peter's, including:

Saint Peter's

- street address

- telephone and fax numbers

- main email address

- various social media pages (facebook, twitter, instagram, twitter, vimeo, youtube)

You can click

- sign up for weekly emails

- mySaintPeter's login (to ACS member and stewardship database)

- flower, candle and prayer requests

- sign up to assist at liturgies (as liturgical assistants, bread bakers, ushers, readers, etc)

- ways to volunteer

- theIntersection

- the building's master calendar.

Additionally, we added a form created by the newcomer commission aimed at capturing information from people who want to connect to Saint Peter's Church -- an online "guest book."

Have something on the website you are confused about? Email [email protected] and we may highlight the answer to your question in the coming weekend.

Also, as part of the update process, we have installed information monitors near the elevator on every floor.  These monitors indicate, in real time, what's happening around the church building as well as upcoming events. Events are highlighted in a "smart" way: if, for example, the system sees a classical concert is happening in the Sanctuary, in addition to displaying default events the sign, knowing there are people in the church building interested in classical music, displays a greater number of classical music events.  If you would like to see what's happening now from the comfort of your home computer or "smart" device, visit www.saintpeters.org/lcd-display/.

STEWARDSHIP 2014

Have you made your pledge yet?

We are trying to keep the pledge process simple.

Please choose the method that works best for you:

1. Submit a secure online pledge form.

2. Set up secure giving on ACS.  This may be a recurring gift (give in increments throughout the stewardship year) or one-time gift(s) on a date(s) of your choosing.  We will interpret your online giving setup as your stewardship pledge.  Online gifts may be made by credit card or ACH transfer directly from your bank account.  (Please note that the church will be charged as much as 5% per credit card transaction and adjust your gift accordingly.) Detailed instructions are available here.

3. Download, print, complete and return a pledge form by U. S. Mail.

You may adjust your 2014 pledge at any time by speaking to one of the pastors.

 Do you still need assistance?

Our pledge goal for this year -- which we must reach -- is $441,000.

EASTER FLOWER FUND

Make your gift to the Easter Flower Fund in memory of, or in honor of someone or a life milestone.  Gifts can be made online (the best way), or by using the pre-printed Easter Flower Fund envelope in your Stewardship packet (a very good way), or by using an Easter Flower Fund envelope available in the Narthex (a good way). All gifts and citations received by April 13 will appear in the printed lists, but if you miss that deadline, the Fund will remain open throughout the Easter season.
