News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

This  Sunday, November 24, is the Last Sunday after Pentecost, also known as Christ the King.  With this Sunday we conclude the liturgical year and our regular Sunday mass readings from the Gospel according to Saint Luke.   New members will be received at each of this day's liturgies. Next Sunday, December 1, the First Sunday in Advent, we begin a new liturgical cycle, reading from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew.

  • At the 8:45 a.m. Mass, I will preach and preside
  • At the 10:00 a.m. Forum, I will reprise "If by reason of strength..." the forum I led about aging - and dying - in New York.
  • At the 11:00 a.m. mass, Pastor Stahler will preside and I will preach.

Notes on this liturgy:

The Thanksgiving for Baptism is composed by Pastor Jared R. Stahler for the Metropolitan New York Synod and is being used by Bishop Rimbo and others throughout the synod.  It emphasizes the synod's "Claimed" mission strategy.

The Eucharistic Prayer is another composed by Gail Ramshaw for use among Lutherans and our full communion partners and is one of the many liturgical prayers composed by Gail, a former member of Saint Peter's Church and in use in churches throughout the country.  Gail and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Gordon Lathrop, are visiting us next weekend.

  • Brunch is provided by Kevin Kunkle.
  • At the 1:30 p.m. misa, Pastor Fabian Arias will preside and preach.
  • At 5:00 p.m. Jazz Mass,  Pastor Jared Stahler will preside and preach; Vicar Carol Schneider will assist.

Annual Midtown Thanksgiving Service, 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Saint Peter's Church with Rabbi Peter Rubinstein preaching.  This is the 78th Midtown Manhattan Interfaith Thanksgiving Service.  It is also the final time Rabbi Rubinstein will preach here as the Senior Rabbi of Central Synagogue.  A reception in the Narthex will follow the liturgy.

Saint Peter's Church WILL BE CLOSED from Thursday, November 28 through Saturday, November 30 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

ADVENT begins on Sunday, December 1, 2013 with the Great Litany sung in Procession and each liturgy in Advent will ring with the hope of Christ's coming.

LOOKING INTO ADVENT

  • Advent Vespers is sung at 6:00 p.m. every Wednesday --December 4, 11, and 18 -- in the Chapel.
  • On the weekend of the Second Sunday in Advent, also the 36th anniversary of the consecration of Saint Peter's Church building, we will bring our 150th anniversary celebration to a close.  See the article below for details.
  • December 15 is the Third Sunday in Advent and includes our annual Hanging of the Greens.

Advent  is a joyous time at Saint Peter's Church with limited meetings so that we can more fully enjoy Christ's and each other's  presence.  We look forward to celebrating that Presence with you during these festive days.

 Peace and Joy,
