News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

There are two more Sundays, November 17 and 24, in this liturgical year in which Saint Luke's is the dominant Gospel.  Beginning with the First Sunday in Advent, December 1, the Gospel according to Saint Matthew will take Luke's place.  This heralds a significant shift in emphasis.  Luke is most concerned about the wideness of God's Promise.  Matthew is most concerned about the depth of that Promise's roots in the "Older" Testament - Torah, Writings and Prophets.  Our weekly liturgies will soon reflect that emphasis.

But there are two Sundays after Pentecost left in which we will hear Christ speaking to us with Luke's accent.  This Sunday, November 17, is the Twenty-sixth Sunday after Pentecost and next Sunday, November 24 is the Last Sunday after Pentecost, commemorating Christ the King.  On each of these Sundays, Jesus points to the permanent Reign of God present in the midst of things temporary.

  • At the 8:45 a.m. Mass, Pastor Stahler will preside and preach.
  • At the 10:00 a.m. Forum , James Sadler will present "Christian Unity through Meditative Practice."
  • At the 11:00 a.m. mass, I will preside, Pastor Stahler will preach and we will install our new Parish Council and Parish Officers.

Notes on  the 11:00 a.m. liturgy:

The Thanksgiving for Baptism was composed by Pastor Jared R. Stahler for the Metropolitan New York Synod and is being used by Bishop Rimbo and others throughout the synod.  It emphasizes the synod's "Claimed" mission strategy.

The Eucharistic Prayer was composed by Gail Ramshaw for use among Lutherans and our full communion partners and is one of the many liturgical prayers composed by Gail, a former member of Saint Peter's Church and in use in churches throughout the country.  Gail and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Gordon Lathrop, will be visiting us next weekend.

  • Brunch will be provided by Kit Kreilick and Friends.
  • At the 1:30 p.m. misa, Pastor Fabian Arias will preside and preach,
  • At 5:00 p.m. Jazz Liturgy with anointing for healing, Vicar Carol Schneider will preside and preach.  The musical leaders will be: Vince Ector, drums/leader; Kyle Koehler, organ; Bruce Williams, saxophones; Matt Chertkoff, guitar

Here in New York we have a unique opportunity to assist victims of the Philippine cyclone:   Give a gift now to Seafarers and International House (www.sih.org).  Here's why:  2/3 of all seafarers in the world are from the Philippines.  These seafarers are unable to communicate with their families at home.  Seafarers and International House is deeply involved with giving them assistance.  Before you support other relief efforts, consider supporting this ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America that is based right here in New York!

Next Sunday, November 24, is the Last Sunday after Pentecost, also known as Christ the King.

  • At the 8:45 a.m. Mass, I will preach and preside.
  • THERE IS NO 10:00 a.m. Forum.
  • At the 11:00 a.m. mass, Pastor Stahler will preside and I will preach.
  • Brunch is provided by Kevin Kunkle.
  • At the 1:30 p.m. misa, Pastor Fabian Arias will preside and preach.
  • At 5:00 p.m. Jazz Vespers, Vicar Carol Schneider will preside and Pastor Jared Stahler will preach.  The musical leaders will be Melissa Stylianou, voice; Jamie Reynolds, piano; Gary Wang, bass; Eric Doob, drums
