News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

Sunday School begins this Sunday at 12:30, immediately following the 11:00 a.m. mass and immediately concluding before the 1:30 p.m. misa.  Although we've tried to meet the needs of our families and children in several different ways, this is the first time in over 20 years that we are planning a regular Sunday School program!  One of the important by-products of Sunday School is that the number of children at the 11:00 a.m. mass will increase and they're attendance will be more regular.  The more often children are at the mass and receive Holy Communion, the more they grow in grace and learn worship behavior.  Please continue to be very understanding as we experience our children growing.

Brunch this Sunday will be pizza Da Napoli.

The presenter at our 10:00 a.m. Forum will be Professor Dennis Raverty discussing "The Sacralization of Nature in German Romantic Landscape."  He includes the painting below and summarizes his presentation as follows:  In the early nineteenth century, Philipp Otto Runge and Casper David Friedrich transformed and elevated landscape painting from the minor genre it had been up to that point, to the bearer of the kind of serious and sublime content that had formerly been reserved for biblical or mythological subjects alone. Explore how these artists redefined the sacred in terms of implied narrative within their landscapes and their evocation of light as a metaphor for the divine presence in nature.

This Sunday we celebrate the Day of Saint Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist.  This is also the 18th Sunday after Pentecost.  Pastor Stahler will preside and preach at 8:45 a.m. and preach at 11:00 a.m.  I will preside at 11:00 a.m.  Vicar Carol Schneider will preside and I will preach at the jazz liturgy with healing at 5:00 p.m.

Videos of Wednesday evenings' Bible Studies may be found here.

Next Sunday, September 29, is the Day of Saint Michael and all Angels.

  • Dance@SaintPeter's will inaugurate their 2013-2014 program at each of these Sunday liturgies.
  • At the 10:00 a.m. Forum, Dr. Lucinda Mosher will make her first presentation entitled Re-articulating Biblical Portraits

And finally, we still need your time and talent in a number of areas of our parish life.  Please read below for a list of our most urgent needs.

YOUR TIME AND TALENT

TandTHere are our most urgent needs:

  • BRUNCH MAKERS (especially NEXT SUNDAY, September 22!!)  Next to the liturgy and education, Sunday Brunch is our most critical Sunday function.  This is a time when our dispersed community gathers to eat and drink, converse and just be together.    We need leaders who are willing to make and serve brunch virtually every Sunday of the coming year.  To offer yourself to do this, please click here.  You will find a list of dates and can sign up there.

  • SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS  We need several teachers for the program, already announced, that begins classes on September 22.  To volunteer, please speak to me on Sunday or call me at 212-935-2200 or email Pastor Derr.  This is the year we've been looking forward to, when a strong, full Sunday School can be offered to our children.  The program is compartmentalized into discreet sections and so no one teacher need serve for the entire year.  The curriculum is ready.

  • USHERS at 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  Wayne Britton is present at both these liturgies and coordinates our ushers who are essential leaders of hospitality.  Can you assist us for either of these services at least once per month?  Again, to volunteer you can email Pastor Derr and he will pass on your contact information to Wayne.

  • ASSISTING MINISTERS for 8:45, 11:00 and 5:00 liturgies.  Liturgies in the Lutheran tradition demand both clergy and lay leadership!  This insistence on lay leadership in liturgy is one of the most important gifts the Lutheran communion offers the whole Church.  To sign up to be trained and assist at any of our liturgies, please click here.  That will take you to monthly calendars where you can sign up (remember to log in, click edit and always save).

USE YOUR WIKI!

You may not be able to say exactly what a wiki is, but you've probably used one (Wiki-pedia). When is the last time you visited Saint Peter's wiki, theIntersection?  Do you know that you can get back issues of This Week at Saint Peter's and News&Notes there?  You can also sign up to make brunch or be a Sunday assistant, add someone to the online prayer list or contribute your own creative writing, read about Saint Peter's planned trip to Spain or promote your upcoming concert.  Basically, you can do just about anything you want to do that relates to life at "the Intersection."  You can watch Pastor Derr's Wednesday Study series, update your profile in our database , or even make a little extra online gift.
