News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

  • On August 15 the whole Church celebrates Mary, Mother of God. Among Roman Catholics, this day is called the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary; in Orthodoxy, the Dormition of the most holy Theotokos [God-bearer] and ever-virgin Mary. This is an ancient feast day and has been universally celebrated by the Church since around 600 C.E. Saint Peter's traditionally transfers this important feast day to the Sunday nearest August 15, and so we will celebrate the Day of Mary, Mother of God, this Sunday, which is also the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost. I will preach and preside at our 8:45, 11:00 and 5:00 pm liturgies.

  • We, as members of a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, have a new Presiding Bishop.  On the fifth ballot, the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, currently serving as Bishop of the Northeast Ohio Synod, was elected the next Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The final vote on that ballot was Elizabeth Eaton, 600 votes and Bishop Mark Hanson, 287 votes.
  • August 15th's Jazz on the Plaza lunch-time concert (12:30) is presented by the legendary and legend-filled Harlem Blues and Jazz Band.

  • Kit Kreilick continues her series on the History of Saint Peter's at our 10:00 a.m. Forum will be the History of Saint Peter's Church, led by Kit Kreilick.
  • Restoration of the floor in the Erol Becker Chapel of the Good Shepherd will be completed this week .(Take a look.) As of Sunday, the chapel is again available for personal prayer and meditation, for 8:45 Sunday mass and for daily mass at 12:30. One other floor will be rehabilitated this summer: the Living Room carpet has tentatively been scheduled to be replaced over our regular Labor Day closure. We are working to avert scheduling conflicts during that work.

  • Watch for several special News and Notes issues in the weeks ahead as we prepare for the 2013-2014 Program Year. Over these next weeks we'll introduce our new vicar, Carol Schneider, and announce our schedules for children's Sunday School, Wednesday evening studies (this year available to all in video on line), our upcoming Sunday forums and other important information. We will also be asking you for lots of help: liturgical assistants, brunch makers, Sunday School teachers and other positions critical to our life together. Please also watch for a separate mailing about on March 2014 Saint Peter's trip to Spain.

Finally, as you know, Pastor John Damm, our Senior Pastor emeritus, was hospitalized during my vacation and is now in rehabilitation therapy at Wartburg. While he is not yet up to visits or telephone conversations - he's busy with therapy! - he does welcome cards. You can send them to:

The Rev. Dr. John S. Damm

While you're sending cards, one of our members Mary Williams, is about to celebrate her 100th Birthday on September 2, 2013. Cards may be sent to her at

PARISH COUNCIL NOMINATIONS

Are you, or someone you know at Saint Peter's, interested in serving on the Parish Council?

Each summer, the Nominating Committee works to secure the names of congregational members interested in serving a three year term as a member of the Parish Council.  The committee then emails a questionnaire to each person, and sets a time, usually in early September, for interviews.  Please contact any member of the committee with suggested names, including your own!  They are Jack Anderson, Gloria Biegler, Connie Peterson, Pamela Rausch, and Carolyn Wagner, chair.

CONCERT SERIES RETURNS

Tom Schmidt has invited Karin and Joy Gunderson, a Lutheran mother-daughter musical duo known as "Heavenly Harp," to perform.  Karin will relate inspiring stories from her work as a harpist for hospice. The Gundersons also will play harp duets, sing together and add occasional flute accompaniment. There is no admission charge; offerings are accepted. For more information visit their Website www.HeavenlyHarp.org.  CDs and DVDs will be available.
