News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

BRUNCH WILL BE SERVED THIS WEEK, THANKS TO FRAN AND SAM REED!

At the 10:00 a.m. Forum, Nancy Rakoczy will present "Websites of Faith."

In 1526, Martin Luther produced his Deutche Messe, or German Mass, comprised of 4 magnificent hymns and some not-so-magnificent liturgical rubrics.  At 11:00 a.m. this Sunday, we will use the former and ignore the latter as we celebrate the mass.  The hymn settings, along with other music propers for the day, are the collaborative work of our two Directors of Music, Tom Schmidt and Ike Sturm who, later this summer will present their work to the 2013 assembly of the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians.  Musically, this Second Sunday after Pentecost (our first "green Sunday" since last January) will be anything but ordinary.

That said, we are now in "ordinary time."  Here's what that means in our Sunday liturgies. This Sunday, after a four month hiatus, we'll jump back into Luke's story of Jesus.  From now through the end of November (with few exceptions) we will make our way through Luke's narrative in an orderly fashion.  While the First Reading and Psalm are clearly connected to the Gospel each Sunday, the Second Readings will be a continuous romp through one of Saint Paul's letters, beginning this Sunday with the first chapter of his letter to the Galatians.  By summer's end, we'll have read through Galatians, Colossians and Ephesians and be well on our way through a letter not from Paul, the Letter to the Hebrews.  The color, of course, is green.

The Sanctuary will remain in its current configuration.  We'll continue using Setting Four for our 6:00 Wednesday evening and 8:45 Sunday morning masses. On June 9, we'll begin using Setting Nine at 11:00. Throughout the summer beginning this Sunday, we will be using a Liturgy of the Word for Healing at Jazz Vespers.

Two of our members are dealing with traumatic illnesses and would, I think, appreciate a card.

From June 5 through June 16, the widely-acclaimed musical Bare: A Pop Opera will be presented in our Sanctuary and in our Theater.  All proceeds from the short run of this show will support Trinity Place Shelter for homeless LGBT youth which is at Trinity Lutheran Church, 100th Street and Columbus, Manhattan.  Sponsored by our own Visible Witness and presented under the auspices of Midtown Arts Common, Sponge Theatricals, a NY-based theatre company, has pledged to donate all proceeds from a short run of its production to the Shelter.  The show is about two high-school students at a parochial boarding school whose "star-crossed" path through young same-sex romance is both dramatic and touching. Performances are in the Sanctuary and the Theatre June 5 - June 16.

Finally, watch for a separate mailing about our June 16 Annual Congregational meeting. It will come from our President, Eric Stenshoel and include the agenda, 2013-2014 Program Budget, 2013-2014 Property Budget (with five year projections) and our restated Mission Statement.  These constitute the action items for this annual congregational meeting.

Peace and Joy,

TOGETHER WE PRAY
Together with the churches around the world:
We give thanks for last year's free, fair and peaceful elections in Lesotho and pray for continued strengthening of democracy in that country.  We pray for the people of Mukwe, an area of Namibia stricken by drought.  We pray for a just resolution of continued labor strife in South Africa, particularly in the mining sector.  We pray for Ellinah Wamukoya, who was ordained by the Anglican Church of South Africa as Bishop of Swaziland last November, becoming the first female bishop in all of Africa.
WELCOMING NEWCOMERS
A dinner for newcomers is scheduled for Monday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m

New members will be received Sunday, June 16, 2013 -- the day of the annual congregational meeting.

If you are interested or know someone who is interested in becoming more deeply connected to Saint Peter's Church, click here to indicate  interest and to R.S.V.P. for dinner.
