News & Notes

Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's:

"And they began to make merry."

That's the way the King James Bible describes the celebration in Jesus' parable of the prodigals, which, fatted calf and all, is the Gospel for this Sunday, giving us a textual reminder that every Sunday, including Sundays in Lent, are celebrations of Easter.  It's difficult to fast when there's a well-prepared fatted calf!  This parable sets the theme for this Sunday and the week that follows; it is the last time we'll hear from the Evangelist Saint Luke until 11:00 a.m. on Easter Sunday.  Please note the liturgical schedule for Holy Week and Easter available below.

At Vespers for these Sundays in Lent, we've been giving God thanks for "the growing light that lengthens our days."  Those thanks will be particularly appropriate this Sunday:  DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME begins on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 2:00 a.m.  SPRING AHEAD those time devises that don't do this automatically.

I'm leading our 10:00 a.m. forum this Sunday, continuing my occasional presentations around our 150th anniversary theme, DEEPLY ROOTED, ALWAYS GROWING.  This week's topic:  Who decided that?  Policy.  Program. Implementation. Innovation:  A look at decision-making at Saint Peter's Church, 1977-present.  Our vicar, Dustin Wright, will be the presenter at the March 17 10:00 a.m. forum, the last until after Easter.

Sunday School is at 12:30-1:30 p.m. with lunch in the Plaza Room and two classes - for children ages 3-5 in the Plaza Room and children ages 6 and up in the music Room.  This first "term" ends on Sunday March 17 and the next term begins with a party on Sunday, April 7.

Please also note that on Wednesdays, March 6, 13 and 20, there is no 6:00 p.m. liturgy at Saint Peter's Church.  Please note the following schedule and locations:

Wednesday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 13:

Vespers at 6:30 p.m. Supper at 7:00; Study, 7:30-8:30 p.m.

At the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary

325 East 33rd Street (between 2nd and 1st avenues) (6 train to 33rd Street, walk east 4 blocks; M15 bus or M101 bus.)

Wednesday, March 20:  7:30 pm.

At the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany

1393 York Avenue at East 74th Street

(6 train to 68th or 77th Streets, M31, M102 buses)

Tenebrae (a service of psalms, readings, light and darkness)

Several of us, including Dr. Schmidt, Sam Hutcheson and I, will be on vacation during the week of March 16-23, so don't be surprised by our absence.  However, we'll still see you all this Sunday!

Peace and Joy,

AJD

TOGETHER WITH THE CHURCHES
AROUND THE WORLD

This week we pray for the people of Myanmar as they begin developing just and humane political and civil system after decades of military rule.  We give thanks for new government efforts to end the ivory trade in Thailand.  We pray that recently announced peace talks between the Thai government and Muslim militants in the south of the country succeed in ending a nearly decade-long conflict that has claimed more than 5000 lives.

EASTER FLOWER FUND
Easter Flower Fund
The Design Committee is beginning to plan for especially festive decorations for Easter in this sesquicentennial year. Make your gift to the  Easter Flower Fund in memory of, or in honor of someone or a life milestone.

Gifts can be made online (the best way), or by using the pre-printed Easter Flower Fund envelope in your Stewardship packet (a very good way), or by using an Easter Flower Fund envelope available in the Narthex (a good way). All gifts and citations received by March 24 will appear in the printed lists distributed at the Easter masses, but if you miss that deadline, the Fund will remain open throughout the Easter season.

Building Improvements Needed?  The Property Committee is seeking suggestions for capital improvements to our building.  Physical improvements and purchases over $1,000 are funded under the Capital Budget.  The committee and staff are working to identify our renewal needs, but we don't want to overlook anything important that you think needs attention, or should be changed or added to enhance our programs.  Forms to submit your capital budget suggestions are available here, from any Property Committee member (John Cavanagh, Art Clark, Kit Kreilick, John Mostenan or Edward Wagner) or from Kathy Burt in the church office.  Please turn in your form by March 29, 2013 for consideration for next year's budget.  The more information you can provide about details of the work to be done or items to be purchased, the easier it will be for the committee and the Parish Council to decide on budget priorities.
