Dear Faithful People of Saint Peter's
|
This Sunday we celebrate the Day of the Evangelist Saint Luke the Physician. Rites of healing will be included in all our Sunday liturgies.
At the Constituting Convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1987, congregations were asked to commemorate Luke and include rites of healing on the Sunday closest to the Day of Saint Luke (October 18). Particular concern for those living with HIV/AIDS prompted the ELCA's request. This Sunday marks the 25th anniversary of Saint Peter's inclusion of rites of healing in its regular liturgies. Currently, rites of healing are included every Monday at our 12:30 mass, at Jazz Vespers every Sunday and at appropriate times at every Sunday liturgy, usually once per month.
Because the Gospel according to Saint Luke and the Acts of the Apostles share the same author and that author uses many technical medical terms in the Luke-Acts narrative, the term "physician" has traditionally been added to Luke's name. Hence the emphasis on health, healing and wholeness.
The 10:00 a.m. Forum, "At Home in the World" will be presented by New York Times acclaimed author and artist Judith Dupr whose books include Skyscrapers (1996, 2006), Churches (2001 [Saint Peter's appears in this volume]), Monuments (2006) and the acclaimed Full of Grace: Mary in Faith, Art and Life (2010). Judith is a fascinating speaker, This is a "must" forum!
We will celebrate Reconciliation/Reformation Day at all our liturgies next Sunday, October 28 and include liturgical material from Luther and from our 150 year heritage at the 11:00 a.m. mass.
We will also begin one of our 150th Anniversary Deeply Rooted, Always Growing events at our 10:00 a.m. Forum that Sunday, beginning a three-part series The Jesus of Islam and his Blessed Virgin Mother led by one of our favorite presenters, Lucinda Mosher.
Finally on October 28, our annual Congregational Meeting will follow the 11:00 a.m. mass. Peace and Joy,
Amandus J. Derr
Senior Pastor

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE
| THE MOMENTUM PROJECT
The Momentum Project continues to serve all those with food security issues: the disabled, the unemployed, the homeless, seniors, families with children, and those enduring serious illnesses. Due to severe budget cuts, volunteers are needed for the lunch and dinner program on Tuesdays at Saint Peter's Church: Mondays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for dinner. Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for lunch. Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for dinner. If you would like to help with the catering staff and make a difference in your community, please call the Momentum Volunteer Manager, Charles Vaccaro, at 212-691-8100 extension 2104. SAINT PETER'S BREAKFAST PROGRAM On Tuesday 135 guests were served this past Tuesday. To date, we've served 6,591 guests in 2012. 7,643 guests were served in 2011. We also are pleaded to thank the volunteers who come to us through New York Cares. According to their own accounting, NYC volunteers have provided 730 service hours at Saint Peter's Breakfast Program in the period July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. To volunteer, come to the front desk between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday mornings. |
