Principal's Message

                                                  September 14, 2013

Dear Palisades Elementary Parents,

Parent Outreach: This series of four workshops called "Bright Start" will provide an opportunity for kindergarten and first grade parents to share their parenting challenges and problems together. Parents of older students are also invited.

Week 1- Smooth Transitions

Week 2- Setting Clear Boundaries for Your Child (and yourself)

Week 3- Creating Logical and Natural Consequences

Week 4- Maintaining Family Values in a Media Saturated Society

Four Mondays after Assembly - Sept. 16, 23, 30, Oct. 7, 2013 at   8:30 am - 10:00 am in the Library.

nullCome out to the movies: There will be a Pali Movie Night Madness fundraiser next Friday, September 20 to support scholarships for the 5th Grade Astro Camp trip. We are striving for 100% student participation on the trip.   The movie "Hugo" (rated PG) will be shown from 6 pm - 8:30 pm in the Pali Auditorium. Kids can spend a couple of hours with their friends eating pizza and watching a movie, while parents can go out and enjoy a meal/evening in town on their own. Tickets are $15 per child (all grades welcome) and can be purchased online @ partyonpali.com or cash at the door.

PRMS Prepare for 6th grade: On Wednesday, September 25 @ 6:00 p.m. Mrs. Somoza, Principal of Paul Revere Middle School will be here to discuss the Paul Revere Sixth Grade program and to answer questions. This evening program should take about an hour. I encourage all 4th and 5th grade parents and students to attend. If you have particular questions for the Principal or the sixth grade teachers, please send them to Joan Ingle who will pass them on to the Paul Revere staff.

kids orchestra News: Our after school instrumental music program begins on Friday, September 27. If you have not already done so, please register online at www.childrensmusicworkshop.com/schools/palisades so that we can reserve a spot for your child in the orchestra before enrollment closes.Elementary school is the perfect time to learn a musical instrument.  The combination of discipline, concentration, socialization and creativity that students learn in group music lessons are skills that transfer to all areas of their lives. Researchers are providing us with an unprecedented understanding of how we think and how we learn.  Now we know that instrumental music can be a vital part of a complete education. Thanks very much and we hope to see you in the orchestra!

FYI: Every fourth Friday of the month all Lost and Found items will be donated to a charity. Please check the cafeteria for your lost items.

hold that thoughtAnnouncement: The Palisades Elementary Learning Lab Program is continuing this year. It is a reading intervention program, which can be crucial in helping struggling students become successful readers. Our teachers have in-class strategies for intervention and also a pullout program to use with small groups or individual students in K-2. The program is research-based and we know that this provides the most effective systematic approach because it has been designed for students to learn, practice and reinforce essential reading skills. There are three 30-minute mini-lessons a week. We will also be expanding the program to include math for some grade levels. For identified students in grades 3 - 5 we are planning a push-in classroom support program. A special thanks goes out to PEP for funding this very important and essential support for our students.

Salad Bar News: We will start our salad bar days on October 1. We are planning to have them on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are one of fifteen schools that are the recipients of two brand new salad bars. They are really the best! Lisa Taylor will be sending out a link to a sign-up genius for parents to help with these two days. It would be possible to have additional days with more volunteers. Many thanks go to Leeann Daly, Susi Cohen, Tracy Judah and Lisa Taylor for all of your amazing work over the last few months that have made all of these healthy upgrades for our students possible. Thanks also go to our many active parents, Gelson's Supermarket, United Fresh Org, "Let's Get Salads to Schools" and a few other facilitators.

Yours truly,

Joan Ingle,

Principal
