Principal's Message

Dear Parents,                                                             August 3, 2013
2013-14A New Beginning: With the school year beginning early this year on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 7:59 am, please remember that all of us working together with as much harmony as possible is an essential ingredient in the educational success of our children.  Please also remember that you are your child's first teacher and continued parental love and support plays a crucial role in a student's learning process.  We very much appreciate the incredible involvement of Palisades Elementary School parents.  Not only does the School very much benefit from the financial support of its parent group, but your active participation in individual classes, grade levels and school-wide activities makes us stand apart from most other schools.  We encourage you to commit yourself to our community and become a voice for a productive and enriching environment for your children.
classroom assignment2013-2014 Student Classroom Assignments: As we prepare for next Fall, please be reminded that our teachers and the Principal will be responsible for deciding the 2013-2014 student assignments.  As noted in your Parent/Student Handbook, parents may not request specific teachers.  Prior to the start of school on Tuesday, August 13 the new class rosters will be posted in the front of the school at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 12. Additionally, the school will be mailing your classroom placements to your home in August.

First Week Packets: During the first week of school you will be receiving a packet of important letters, forms and information, etc. Please make sure you return all requested items back to your child's teacher by Monday, August 26. Remember various forms are due every year. Please do not discard the forms because you already filled them out last year. LAUSD requires us to have new forms completed each and every year. Please take your time to go over all the items in the packet.

lunch

Breakfast and Lunch Program: Breakfast is served from 7:40 am - 8:05 am and is 60 cents. Students eating breakfast may take their belongings with them to the cafeteria but must remember to bring them to the line-up area for the beginning of school. The breakfast and lunch menu for the month will be available in the office when we receive it. Snacks for purchase are now $1.00 and lunch is available for $1.50 each day for those preferring not to bring lunch from home. Free and reduced-fee breakfast and lunch applications will be in the cafeteria on the first day of school.  If your child purchases food on campus it is important for parents to ensure that their child has enough money in their cafeteria account to do so.

Taffic rules

Traffic and Arrival: We depend on parent cooperation to help us with our "Kiss and Drop" school arrival process as cars drop off kids in front of the school.  Grades 1-5 students are to report to the playground where supervision is provided from 7:40 am until the bell rings.  Students may not go to their classrooms prior to the start of school nor after school dismissal.  Supervision is only provided on the playground before or after school.  Kindergarten students are to be on time and "hand delivered" to the teacher in his or her classroom and also picked up there.
don't forget

Street Parking Only Parking is limited at our school. Please remember that there are no visitor parking spaces on our campus.  Please do not park in STAFF PARKING---which is all the spaces in our only parking lot.   As it is, we do not have enough spaces for our current faculty and staff.  When you take a space in the lot, you force an employee to the streets where parking restrictions are enforced.  Teachers cannot be expected to move their cars every couple of hours.  Parents are prohibited from parking in the red "Drop Off Only" zone in front of the main office.  The blue zone in front of the auditorium is a Handicapped Parking Space.  The fine for parking in a blue zone is over $400.

early dismissalRemember that during the First Week we have Early Dismissals for Kindergarten Students only: All kindergarten classes will be in session after the first day from 7:59 am - 11:30 am through August 22, except for the first day, which will be 9:00 am - 10:30 am. First grade through fifth grade will be following their regular daily schedules: 7:59 am - 2:45 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 7:59 am - 1:45 pm on Tuesday and Thursday.

Beyond the bellRegarding After School:
Beyond the Bell is for grade school students 2 - 5 for after school care!

Teamwork Governing Council & Committee Openings: Our various committee meetings are always open to the parents. The first committee meetings will be August 22 at 2:00 pm, in order to discuss the goals for this year and to select new members. The first Governing Board Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 12 also at 2:00 pm. At this time we will be welcoming all of the new committee members and all new parents and continuing parents who wish to be involved!

Yours truly,

Joan Ingle, Principal

Thought for the Week: You are worried about seeing him spend his early years in doing nothing.  What!  Is it nothing to be happy?  Nothing to skip, play, and run around all day long?  Never in his life will he be so busy again.  Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Emile, 1762
