Principal's Message
Dear Parents, May 11, 2013
Appreciation Week: Thank You to all of our parents and students for the marvelous showering of affection upon the teachers and staff. There were so many acts of kindness such as smiles, breakfasts, lattes, flowers and the Friday luncheon. Deep appreciation to Catalina Viotti, our three PEP chairs, room parents and all of the students, who put their heads, hands and hearts together into making last week so special for us.
Parent Outreach Committee Speaker Series: Our Parent Outreach Committee is bringing us two special sessions beginning this Monday, May 13 at 8:30 am, which is "Respect, Resilience & Rites of Passage" geared toward 3rd-5th grade parents. This Friday, May 17 is "Bright Start" covering boundaries, natural consequences, media and family stress geared towards kinder and first grade parents. All parents are invited regardless of children's' ages. Dr. Barbara Moreno, an experienced Westside child and family therapist, will lead each session. Suggested donation is $10 per workshop.
Volunteer Tea: This Wednesday, May 15 at 8:30 am the staff will be hosting a morning tea for all of our wonderful parent volunteers. We are so grateful for all of your caring support and wish to express our thanks in this way.
PEP: Our last PEP meeting will be next Wednesday, May 15 at 6:30 pm in the library. Please come to hear about our plans for next year. An end of the year celebration will follow.
Last Committee Meetings: This Thursday, May 16 at 2:00 pm our last committee meetings for this school year will take place.
STAR: This Thursday evening, May 16 is the STAR play. See Annie for the details.
Governing Council: Ballots and candidate statements were sent home Friday, May 10. Completed ballots are due back in the school office by 4:30 pm on Friday, May 24. The candidate receiving the most votes will be the new Parent Rep for a two-year term; the candidate receiving the next most votes will be Parent Rep alternate for the same term. Sacramento Here We Go: At 5:30 am on Friday, May 17 all of the fourth graders and many parents will board buses and head to the airport for an all day field trip to visit the state capital, mine for gold, visit an old school house and enjoy other California adventures. We will return later the same night. This is a wonderful trip and one of the great experiences for kids at Pali Elementary.
Principal's Coffee and Chat: On Monday, May 20 at 8:30 am we will be having a special coffee and chat discussion about our conflict mediation program called Tribes. Our parent liaison, Tara Sizlo will be speaking on the many elements of this Pali program. What is Tribes and how was it started at Pali? How does Tribes strengthen the community at Pali and how is it woven throughout the school, students, staff, PEP and families? Learn Tribes exercises that Parents can do at home with kids. All are welcome Story Pirate Assemblies: On Wednesday, May 22 we will be having two story pirate assemblies after lunch.
Three Day Memorial Day Weekend: Please remember that our school will be closed on Monday, May 27. This is of course a National Holiday. Enjoy the time with your family.
Heads Up: International Day will be on Thursday, May 30. Incentives for Summer Workbooks: Supplemental "Review" Books are available on-line. "LA Kids Learn" books are for all elementary age students for summer review and their titles are "Review First Grade-Get Ready for Second Grade"; "Review Second Grade-Get Ready for Third Grade" etc. Parents can order them at www.tcmpub.com. If your child finishes theirs and brings it back to school in August completed, they will earn the opportunity to ring our historic bell with Mrs. Ingle. Please encourage them to engage in this very important summer brain stimulating activity and this rare Pali incentive.
TB Tests for Volunteers: When school reopens on August 13, all volunteers serving for more than one day must complete a School Volunteer Application and get a clearance completed by a physician. Between now and the beginning of school is a great time to do this. Applications will be available in the office beginning May 21. The form is also on our website. If you need help in locating a place to have your TB test done outside of your doctor's office, we will have a list.
Dismissal Schedule: On Wednesday, June 5 and Friday, June 7 dismissal time for all grades will be 1:05 pm. On Thursday, June 6 times will remain the same at 1:30 pm for Kinder and 1:45 pm for Grades
1 - 5.
Culminating Calendar: The Culmination Ceremony schedules are as follows; The Kindergarten Culmination Ceremony will be Thursday, June 6 at 9:00 am. Our culminating Fifth Grade Class of 2013 Ceremony is scheduled the next day on Friday, June 7 at 8:30 am. Both will be in the auditorium.
Sincerely,
Joan Ingle,
Principal
Sunday is Mother's Day: Mother's Day is celebrated to honor all mothers and express gratitude for the hardships they bear in bringing up a child. Most countries including USA, Australia, Canada and India celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday of May. Mothers Day came into being due to the efforts made by Ms. Julia Ward Howe and Ms. Anna Jarvis. The Resolution for having a dedicated Mothers' Day was signed by USA President Woodrow Wilson on May 8, 1914. Since then people across the world have been celebrating Mothers' Day with joy and devotion. The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness. Happy Mothers' Day to All!
Thought for the week: There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has it. ~Chinese Proverb
