Garden Update
The Discovery Garden is thriving with the help of our students, parents and teachers, allowing all to explore science, nature and nutrition.
In February, our 4th and 5th grade Garden Club kids painted pots and potted flowers in them for a Valentine's Day plant sale. Third graders popped the corn they harvested last fall and learned more about corn and its importance to Native American tribes. Ms. Williams' 2nd graders planted bulbs and sweet peas and learned about how plants reproduce and grow. Ms. Mollica's kindergarteners harvested lettuce and made a beautiful salad for themselves and the Founder's Day Luncheon. We finished off the month with a "free salad day" where parents and children were invited to harvest and take home bags of fresh lettuce.
In March, first graders explored the garden by mapping it, discovering why gardeners need to know their "Cardinal Directions" (North, South, East & West). They also harvested chamomile and prepared other dried teas for their Mothers' Day tea making project in May. In our last week before spring break, the kindergarteners harvested the spinach they grew and made yummy spinach pizza and spinach pasta!
We welcome April with much planting, harvesting and learning, and even a possible visit from Chef Alice Waters, founder of the Edible Garden concept!
