PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents,                                                January 19, 2013

MLK Day:  All LAUSD schools will be closed this Monday, January 21, in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday.

School Enrollment and Lottery:  Applications will be available in the main office for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year this Monday, January 14. If you know of someone who lives outside the traditional Palisades Elementary School attendance area and wants to submit a lottery application, please let him or her know that the application must be returned by Monday, March 11 at 3:00 p.m. The lottery drawing will take place on Friday, March 22 at 8:30 am. If you currently have a child at Palisades Elementary School and they have a sibling that will become school aged for the upcoming year, please understand that you must complete an enrollment application for your younger student. Parents who have moved out of the area please come and fill out a lottery form for next year. If the district's policy were to change, you should be on the lottery waiting list to back-up your child's enrollment at Pali

Parent Outreach Speaker:  Lee Hausner, author of Homework without Tears, will address this topic and answer questions on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at 8:30 am in the library.

Bingo Night:  Please come to the Methodist Church gym across the street from Pali this  Friday, January 25 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm for this much-loved event. There will be pizza available for purchase, Pali teachers will be there calling the games, and prizes include the popular penguins all the kids want. There will also be a bake sale benefiting Tribes. There will be lots of prizes & special guests/teachers calling the games. Please join your friends and your children's friends for this special community event.

Science Fair:  It's happening on Monday, Feb. 4 in the auditorium. Let's get the kids involved! For more information, please pick up a registration form in the entry hallway by the office or check your child's backpack. Participation is encouraged! Have your child pick
something interesting to them and make it fun. There are books available at the libraries, online resources, teacher liaisons, and Science Fair parents all willing to help make this a great experience.  Your Science Fair team - David Dawson, Kristina Morris and Susan McInerney is at your service.  Questions to the team can be directed to sbmcinerney@yahoo.com.

Restored Full School Year: The LAUSD school board has voted and approved restoring the 180-day school year. Therefore, the last instructional day will be Friday, June 7, 2013. Please plan accordingly. Kinder Graduation will be on Thursday, June 6 and Fifth Grade Culmination on Friday, June 7.

More Calendar News: A draft of the 2013-14 Calendar is on the LAUSD.net website.

The first day of instruction should be Tuesday, August 13, 2013.

The final day of instruction should be Friday, June 6, 2014.

We should have the entire week of Thanksgiving off.

Winter Break should begin Monday, December 23 & school should resume Monday, January 13, 2014.

2013 PTA Founder's Day: Each February, PTA groups throughout the United States celebrate the foundation of this national organization, which was formed to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in the home, school and community.  Our Founder's Day offers a chance to formally recognize those parents, teachers and community leaders who have gone "above and beyond" to help build Pali Elementary into the successful school it is today. The celebration luncheon will occur Thursday, Feb. 21 at 2:00 pm.

Mark Your Calendars and Get Ready to Spell:  The Second Annual Pacific Palisades Spelling Bee has been scheduled for Sunday, February 24, 2013.  Last year, Pali Elementary had a great showing at this community-wide event and Pali students took home 4 of the 12 trophies awarded.  Let's do it again!  Mrs. Ingle will be there as a judge and would love to see ALL of her students there.  Sign-up by February 7 at http://www.palibee.com.

Good News in the Cafeteria this February: There are some positive changes beginning in our cafeteria in a few weeks. Below is a list of some small steps of a new wave of healthy food:

*Mondays will be meatless.

*Breakfast menus will now be streamlined to allow students to have 3 or 4 items.

*Cheese sandwich or veggie burger will be a new daily offering.

*Whole fruit will now be sliced for easier eating (now that's thinking about kids!).

Sincerely,

Joan Ingle,

Principal
