PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

 Dear Parents,                                                                    October 19, 2012

Yee Haw:  We had a fantastic turnout last Saturday for our annual Yee Haw extravaganza. We all had a wonderful time and we are so grateful to the many people who were so dedicated to the tremendous success of this event.

Dr. Barbara Moreno Presents: The second of four Parent Coaching sessions with Marriage and Family Therapist Dr. Barbara Moreno entitled "Bright Start" will be this Monday, October 22 at 8:30 a.m. in the Library. Dr. Moreno is a well-known Westside child and family therapist as well as a parent and teacher. Explore strategies to get over the humps and bumps of childrearing - setting boundaries, bedtime, meals, media monitoring, establishing family traditions, and respectful communication. All are welcome to join.

Box Tops:  Remember to turn in your Box Tops collection sheets this next week!  At this coming Monday assembly we will draw three lucky winners who will receive gift certificates to the yogurt shoppe, and the class with the most completed collection sheets gets to keep the Box Top Bear until the next drawing!

Pali Beautification Day: For Pali Parents, Friends with Green Thumbs and those of you generously donating your Gardeners... Saturday, October 27th is Pali Beautification Day.  We have Dirty Girl Organic Land Care coming to help us clear out, prune and pretty up Swarthmore starting at 10 am until 1 pm.  We need you!  Please sign up at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080B4EACAD28A46-pali
Bring rakes, brooms, pick up pans and wear long pants, sunglasses and sunscreen for the event.  You'll get a work out while meeting parents and community members. Thank You!

Halloween Parade: On Tuesday, October 31, all students and teachers will gather with their teachers and classmates for this wonderful annual event. From 8:30 - 9:30 am all are invited to attend the parade on the playground. Please read the Halloween guidelines sent home to make sure that your children are dressed safely for the day.

Calling All Sweet Tooths: This year our Palisades Elementary children will have the opportunity to donate their extra Halloween candy to those members of our larger community who don't have the chance to celebrate Halloween, including the homeless.  Please deposit your excess candy into the boxes, which will be at the entry hallway of the school on Wednesday and Thursday, November 1 and 2.  This will be a great opportunity for your child to learn a little more about the gift of sharing.

Prepare for 6th grade: On Wednesday, November 7 @ 6:00 p.m. Mrs. Somoza, Principal of Paul Revere Middle School will be here to discuss the Paul Revere Sixth Grade program and to answer questions. This evening program should take about an hour. I encourage all 4th and 5th grade parents and students to attend. If you have particular questions for the Principal or the sixth grade teachers, please send them to Joan Ingle who will pass them on to the Paul Revere staff.

Head Lice: The bane of many parents, the head louse is a tiny, wingless parasitic insect that lives among human hairs and feeds on extremely small amounts of blood drawn from the scalp. Although they may sound gross, lice (the plural of louse) are a very common problem, especially for kids ages 3 years to 12 years (girls more often than boys). Lice aren't dangerous and they don't spread disease, but they are contagious and can just be downright annoying. Their bites may cause a child's scalp to become itchy and inflamed, and persistent scratching may lead to skin irritation and even infection.

Having head lice is not a sign of uncleanliness or poor hygiene. The pesky little bugs can be a problem for kids of all ages and socioeconomic levels, no matter how often they do - or don't - clean their hair or bathe. However, you can help to prevent kids from getting lice - or from becoming re-infested with lice - by taking the following precautions:

  • Tell kids to try to avoid head-to-head contact at school (such as on the playground or during P.E.) and while playing at home with other children.
  • Tell kids not to share combs, brushes, hats, scarves, bandanas, ribbons, barrettes, hair ties or bands, towels, helmets, or other personal care items with anyone else, whether they may have lice or not.
  • Tell kids not to lie on bedding, pillows, and carpets that have recently been used by someone with lice.
  • Every 3 or 4 days, examine members of your household who have had close contact with a person who has lice. Then, treat those who are found to have lice or nits close to the scalp.

We are so proud of all of our Pali Writers!
