Dear Parents, September 22, 2012
Bookends Used Book Ends Drive on Sept. 25:
The BookEnds book drive is coming to an end this Tuesday, Sept. 25. Please help our 5th grade BookEnds Ambassadors reach their goal of 3,000 books! Your gently used books will be donated to children who are desperately in need of books. Look for the collection boxes at the entrance to campus. For more information about BookEnds please click on the following link www.bookends.org or contact 4th grade mom Melissa Standish (melissa.standish@gmail.com)
Heads Up: On Wednesday, September 26 School will be closed in observance of Yom Kippur. FYI: Every fourth Friday of the month all Lost and Found items will be donated to a charity. Please check the cafeteria for your lost items.
News: Our after school instrumental music program begins on Friday, September 28. If you have not already done so, please register online at www.jointheorchestra.com or www.childrensmusicworkshop.com/schools/palisades so that we can reserve a spot for your child in the orchestra before enrollment closes. Elementary school is the perfect time to learn a musical instrument. The combination of discipline, concentration, socialization and creativity that students learn in group music lessons are skills that transfer to all areas of their lives. Researchers are providing us with an unprecedented understanding of how we think and how we learn. Now we know that instrumental music can be a vital part of a complete education. Thanks very much and we hope to see you in the orchestra! Big Announcement: The launching of the beginning of the Palisades Elementary Learning Lab Program is coming! On Tuesday, October 2 we will begin the Learning Lab Program. Reading intervention programs are crucial in helping struggling students become successful readers. Our teachers have in-class strategies for intervention and also a new pull-out program available to use with small groups or individual students. The program is research-based and we know that this will provide the most effective systematic approach because it has been designed for students to learn, practice and reinforce essential reading skills. We have planned three 30-minute mini-lessons a week. To learn more, you are invited to attend an informational meeting this Friday, September 28 at 8:30 am in the Library. Please let the office know if you are planning to attend or email joan.ingle@lausd.net. A special thanks goes out to PEP for funding this very important and essential support for our students.
