Levels of hormones, lipids, and other substances can be checked to help determine your risk of disease and monitor your response to therapy. For example, various types of infection or disease can lead to an elevated level of C-reactive protein (CRP), which indicates that there is inflammation somewhere in your body. Inflammation can damage the inner lining of the arteries and increase the risk of developing coronary artery disease, which may eventually lead to a heart attack.
