Getting 'Smart' with Your Irrigation

Are you still pushing a "rain delay" button on your irrigation controller? If so, it might be time for "smart" irrigation controllers, also known as weather-based irrigation controllers.

WBIC's come with weather sensors that monitor climate factors like temperature and precipitation and automatically adjust watering schedules to make sure landscapes get the right amount of water - not too much, not too little.

"The best locations for weather-based irrigation controllers are large slope areas where you don't have different hydro zones," says Stay Green Operations Manager Grant Clack. "When one area is in the shade and one is in the sun, it can be difficult."

Many water agencies are offering rebates for the installation of weather-based irrigation controllers, and some even offer free training and free controllers for individual homeowners who participate in a WBIC training session.

If you think weather-based irrigation control is the smart thing for your property, or would like more information, contact the Stay Green team at (800) 858-5508.
Sustainable Landscaping Tips for Homeowners
You can help the environment in your own yard! Here's the fourth in a series of tips from CalRecycle on saving water and reducing organic waste:

Xeriscaping

Xeriscaping means landscaping with slow-growing, drought-tolerant plants to conserve water and reduce yard trimmings. The practice of xeriscaping will vary from region to region in California. Plants which are appropriate in one climate may not work well in another. Xeriscapes generally require less fertilizer and fewer pest control measures than traditional landscapes. Because pesticides and fertilizers can inadvertently harm beneficial organisms, as well as impact air and water quality, reducing their use is a good idea. And, of course, using less of these materials saves money.
