Feature Article: Changes to ISO14001 Environmental Management Standard

ISO 14001 is one of many standards employed by companies today to guide their environmental strategies. It's been around for a decade now. And although over 300,000 businesses around the world currently follow this ever-evolving voluntary standard, one of the criticisms leveled against ISO 14001 is that it hasn't been a strong enough driver of change. In particular, critics compare the tepid overall impacts of ISO 14001 to how robustly the ISO 9001 standard has impacted product quality. It's likely that ISO drafters took these criticisms to heart in their scheduled 5-year review of the standard.

Here's a snapshot of the proposed changes.

The newest version of ISO 14001 is set to be published sometime in the second half of 2015. When finalized, it will supersede the 2009 version.

  • If you work for an organization currently following the ISO 14001 guidelines, your company will have one year from the publishing date to make any necessary adjustments. The changes to the current standard are not monumental and conforming should not present an insurmountable challenge for any company. Nevertheless, changes will need to be made and the process should begin now with understanding what the new standard will require.

Many of the modifications will merely make existing sections of the current version more explicit
  • Notably, there is a heightened push for organizations to try to have a positive impact on the environment, rather than simply not having a negative impact. Furthermore, the scope of the standard has been broadened to drive companies to look beyond their own operations. This is apparent right from the beginning by the fact that the terms "supply chain", "value chain", and "product life cycle" have been added to the key concepts.

The committee tasked with modifying the standard has also made a concerted effort to make it easier for small and medium enterprises with fewer resources to participate.

  • For this purpose, a lot of time has been spent making the new version more user-friendly. Small and medium enterprises will benefit by being able to engage with stakeholders and control environmental impacts in the supply chain more easily.

Another noteworthy change is that the "preventative measures" concept no longer has its own stand-alone section. In the revised standard, preventative measures are seen as a key part of environmental action, not a separate factor.

Together these alterations take ISO 14001 further in the direction of helping companies drive environmental awareness and action into the heart of their operations and throughout the value chain.

Ideas You Can Use Now!
In our Feature Article, we provided a short synopsis of the proposed changes that the ISO organization intends to make to its environmental management standard, ISO14001. Here are some suggested actions to take in light of this development:
  • The revisions are still in draft form and you can provide ISO with your comments through your "national member body." In the United States, this is ANSI (www.ansi.org). For a list of other national member bodies, visit www.iso.org.
  • If you currently use ISO14001, review the proposed changes (summarized at http://www.iso.org/iso/iso14001_revision) in light of your particular situation. Pay attention to the supply chain implications and the affirmative duty to create environmental benefits.
  • If you don't currently use ISO14001, this version might be something to explore. This is usually done with the assistance of a professional ISO-certified "auditor," who can baseline your situation, help you establish a plan to implement the standard and then audit your compliance to the standard's requirements.
  • Be aware that the change to a new version of the standard represents a significant business opportunity to ISO auditors, with all the implications that brings along.
  • Most standards undergo periodic review by their issuing bodies. Now might be a good time to review the other significant standards that your company uses to check for recent/pending updates.
