Feature Article: Sustainability Reporting and the GRI's G4 Guidelines

Why is sustainability reporting in the spotlight?
More than one company we know well has been trying to figure out how best to use the Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI) latest reporting framework to disclose material environmental and social impact issues to a diverse group of stakeholders. There's a strong focus on GRI-based reporting in companies that are on the sustainability journey.
Why is the spotlight on GRI-based sustainability reporting now? Several key reasons come to mind:
  • A diverse group of stakeholders are increasingly paying attention to the social and environmental impacts that businesses have on them, their communities and the broader global audience. Using a widely-accepted, well-reasoned framework like the GRI adds consistency and clarity to the message.
  • More companies understand the value of reporting environmental and social performance, just as they see value in reporting financial performance. The GRI reporting framework is consistent with "integrated" reporting schemes under which companies will simultaneously report financial, environmental and social performance.
  • The GRI reporting framework has begun its transition from version 3.1 to version 4

More than just a numerical change, the new version of the reporting framework changes the paradigm in two significant ways: (i) asking companies to report only what's "material" instead of mandating certain disclosures and (ii) requiring that all reporters disclose material supply chain impacts. The shift in approach to materiality gives companies the opportunity to winnow down the vast scope of possible issues to report, so that scarce resources aren't diverted to collecting and reporting data on things people don't really care about. And the expanded focus on disclosure of supply chain impacts reflects maturation in our knowledge of where most impacts occur.

What's required to get started?

It's important to understand that reporting (like sustainability) is a journey, not an event. The scope, reliability and data-collection efficiency of your company's reporting will change over time. So, with that caveat, take the long-term perspective and:
  • Understand your reporting framework. Read through the GRI Reporting Guidelines. Although the GRI framework can be a bit complex to navigate at first, it's a great roadmap for understanding the possible scope of information and making sense of what to report. If another protocol is more appropriate (e.g., the various GHG Protocol standards for GHG emissions reporting), then familiarize yourself with what's required.
  • Consider your issues. If you're not already focused and working on specific issues, do a quick screen of the environmental and social issues that might be considered relevant to your industry, your company and the geographies in which your company or its supply chain partners operate. This is a set up for a more extensive materiality assessment.
  • Know your stakeholders. Think broadly about your company's stakeholder universe, including both internal and external players. It's important initially to involve as many players as you can during the materiality assessment. This will help "vet" your issues against the broadest possible range of influencers.

GRI-based sustainability reporting done well can add real value to your business. It takes resources, discipline and a commitment to transparency. Best to get a handle on it before your company's at risk for not knowing and communicating something it should.

Ideas You Can Use Now!

In our Feature Article, we mentioned the recent introduction of the Global Reporting Initiative's G4 sustainability reporting framework. This is the de facto standard for corporate sustainability reporting, so here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Version 4 of the GRI reporting framework is divided into Guidelines and an Implementation Manual. The Guidelines include GRI's Reporting Principles and Standard Disclosures: (i) General Standard Disclosures (applicable to all reporters) and (ii) Specific Standard Disclosures (applicability is dependent on a materiality assessment). The change from version 3.1 eliminates reporting "levels." Now, your report is either "in accordance" with the standard or it's not. So read the Principles and Disclosures sections of the Guidelines first to understand the scope of what is required to be "in accordance with" the standard.
  • Although the GRI has done away with the "+" designation it used to give to reports that were third-party verified, assurance is still a valuable part of the reporting paradigm and worth the investment. We recommend that you interview and select an assurance provider early on in the process. Involving these experts as soon as you've done your preliminary impact and stakeholder scans can make the materiality assessment, data collection and report assembling go much smoother.
  • Your materiality assessment is the key to success with the G4 Guidelines. This process, in which you vet possible environmental and social impacts of your business against a prioritized stakeholder set, will winnow down the scope of possible data collection and reporting points. Assessing materiality is as much art as science; if you've never done it before it would be valuable to reach out to someone who has experience in order to get an idea of the "dos" and "don'ts."
