The Rebel 506 utilizes a chipKIT Uno32 prototyping board which give users access to an Arduino-based programming environment.  With its 32-bit computing environment and 80 MHz processor the Uno32 provides users with a fast and accurate sandboxing environment.  The Rebel's control software is open source and freely available; modify and upload new functionality with MPIDE, chipKIT's free, Arduino derived IDE.  The control code is based on the Arduino API, a framework well known for being accessible to beginners and powerful in the hands of an adept. With ample computing power and the Rebel's clever design, your imagination is the only limitation.  Dozens of projects are available for download on the TenTec 506 Rebel Yahoo group.

The QRP Skunk Werks group have developed a technique for controlling the TEN-TEC Rebel CW rig and sending the tones of the JT65 mode.  All this was done using a Rebel 506, a PC, an antenna and some freely available software.

 

Band Switch

 

The Rebel Alliance group has written a mod of the Rebel's control software.  This mod provides users with a whole variety of new features including support for a band switch board. This was designed by the Rebel Alliance.  Both the mod and board schematics files are freely available (also, available for purchase from the designers).

A4040 Update

 

The tuner remains the top priority project at Alpha. As many of you know we have completely re-designed the tuner since October. We were able to show the new design at Dayton and aside from some minor issues it performed really well. Lately we have been making numerous high power auto tune tests at high SWR with excellent results. Our newly re-designed sheet metal just arrived which was optimized for size and performance. We should have a unit built using this metal shortly and when it is ready I will share images and video on our website. We have been able to take three inches off of the length of the 4040 which should really make a difference in some shacks. The vector network analyzer continues to perform very well as do the new RF switches. No switch failures of any kind have occurred since we have moved to the new design. We changed to a new controlling PC and are in the process of integrating it now. The first step is to get the SPI bus functioning with everything then we will put the finishing touches on the software. There is still quite a bit of detail work to do with the software but the core functionality is all there.

 

As we test the 4040 I continue to be amazed at what it is capable of doing. In some ways it is like an airplane with a good auto pilot that can fly the plane better than a human.

 

It really feels like we are in the final stages of the project. As everyone knows the devil, is in the details and I am not trying to imply that we are done, but we are very close.
