hydrating the homeless
What an amazing impact you are making!
The outpouring of generous donations from the community, the Tempe Public Library's Water for Fines program and delivery support from the United Food Bank we have been able to donate over 1,250 cases to Tempe's homeless providers this summer. That equates to over 30,000 bottles of water into the hands of Tempe's most vulnerable population.

Our Deepest Thanks
At the end of the fiscal year, TCC also had to bid farewell to an amazing Board member, Jenny Norton. After tirelessly serving a three-year term, generously donating to our programs, serving on multiple committees and creating a beautiful event as co-chair of the 2011 Don Carlos Humanitarian Awards we thank Jenny for her tremendous contribution to the TCC mission. Jenny will continue to be involved with our programs. We are so grateful for her unwavering support!
Corrections! We apologize for some inadvertent errors in last month's introductions of two of TCC's new Board members: Gary Roberts and Jennifer Wagner.

Tempe Village
Tempe Community Council (TCC), in partnership with the Maricopa Association of Governments, is initiating a new program to provide resources and services to build an Age-Friendly Community.
After conducting focus groups with community members and extensive research of existing community assets, TCC identified resources and citizen interest in establishing an Aging in Place pilot project. The pilot Village will be a consumer driven model drawing upon the promising practice of a grassroots, national Village business model. Focus group results indicate a strong need for aging in place programs as well as robust public interest in the concept.
TCC is fortunate to be joining forces with Tempe Neighbors Helping Neighbors (TNHN) to make the Village a reality. TNHN was originally established as an all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to helping elderly or disabled Tempeans with basic home and yard care. Gary Roberts, Chair of TNHN is excited about this next phase in the evolution of the organization, "I think Tempe Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a natural fit for the Village pilot. Empowering residents of all ages to connect and support each other in order to enhance lives and strengthen community is what we're all about." Affordable Care Act - what you need to know
Tempe Community Council's project Thrive to Five will be providing support services in the enrollment process. Here are a few facts to keep you in the know:
- Open enrollment in the Health Insurance Marketplace starts October 1, 2013 with coverage beginning January 1, 2014.
- The Marketplace will also screen for eligibility for Medicaid and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). See Arizona's Medicaid Agency - AHCCCS for details.
- Advanced Tax Credits will be offered to help pay for insurance to applicants with incomes between 100 and 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Income thresholds:
- Up to 100% FPL - makes adults with dependent children eligible for Medicaid (in most cases)
- 100-138% of FPL - makes childless adults eligible for expanded Medicaid. If not offered by state or employer insurance, individuals have the option to obtain insurance from the Marketplace
- 133-200% of FPL - makes a person eligible for Basic Health Plan (if and when available in the state)
- 100-250% of FPL - makes a person eligible for reduced cost-sharing, in addition to the advanced tax credit
- 100-400% -of FPL - makes a person eligible for Advanced Tax Credit through the Health Insurance Marketplace
- As of January 1, 2014, health insurance coverage is required; otherwise, a penalty will need to be paid (exemptions do apply).
- Navigators (certified individuals and agencies, including our Thrive to Five staff) will be available to help with the application process
