national volunteer week
2013 National Volunteer WeekApril 21-27, 2013 is recognized as National Volunteer Week. This week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities.

Tempe Community Council thanks our hundreds of volunteers who give so much of their time, talent and resources to make this best community it can be and help connect those in need with those who care. Your work is creating social change and demonstrates the collective power of positive transformation. Working together, we can meet our local and national challenges and accomplish our goals.
Thank you for your service!

In the spirit of this celebration, next week we have compiled another list of local organizations who are in need of your help. Please check out www.tempecommunitycouncil.org/volunteer to learn about the spring and summer volunteer opportunities available in Tempe and our neighboring communities.
Sponsored by Points of Light, National Volunteer Week was established in 1974 and has grown exponentially each subsequent year. For more information visit www.pointsoflight.org.
threads for success
Threads for Success Please join us for the ribbon cutting of Tempe High's new Teen Resource Center. Every year, the TRC serves over 500 students. However, as many as 2,000 teens go unserved due to lack of resources. The TRC is managed by Commitment to Schools in Tempe & Kyrene, a program of Tempe Community Council.

On March 22 and 23 the 12th Annual Cinderella Affair was hosted at the City
of Tempe's Pyle Adult Recreation Center.  The Pyle Center was decorated in pink fabric and resembled a palatial boutique. Over 792 hopeful young ladies found their perfect prom dress, shoes and accessories. The event took hundreds of volunteers to put together and many generous donations from individuals and businesses. Thirty dry cleaners donated 342 dry-cleaning vouchers. CSI etc. donated and set up dressing rooms for the girls.

The Cinderella Affair program was founded in 2002 to assist girls by collecting and distributing gently-used formalwear.  This all-volunteer project is hosted by Tempe Community Council and East Valley Women's League with support from the City of Tempe.

The mission of this project is to help make it financially possible for Tempe's junior and seniors to attend their high school prom.  This annual event is also extended to prom-age students throughout Arizona, to provide an opportunity to make prom affordable and capture a memory that can be treasured for a lifetime!  In addition, the program has also provided dresses for exchange students from the Tempe Sister Cities program, the clients of Hacienda de Los Angeles and young ladies participating in the Miss CHAMPION Pageant.
Dress donations are accepted year-round at the TCC office, located in the BB Moeur historical home located at 34 E 7th Street, Tempe.  More information can be found at www.cinderellaaffair.org.
