LEGISLATIVE SERVICES
Protecting Your Interests

New Jersey's greater business community is affected by nearly every proposal before our elected officials.

Whether it is an expansion of the Consumer Fraud Act, additional liability, or an expansion of the statute of limitations, you can count on NJLRA to engage in every step of the legislative process.

NJLRA successfully lobbied the legislative and executive branches to remove a damaging portion of a popular internet privacy bill, commonly referred to as "The Facebook bill."  Governor Christie referenced NJLRA's research about the unintended consequences it would have for our members and the business community at large in his conditional veto.  The Legislature ultimately adopted the Governor's proposed changes, which were largely credited to NJLRA.  The bill has now passed both houses with NJLRA's concerns rectified.  Learn more.

A collaborative effort among NJLRA and other business associations prompted the sponsor of the "Opportunity To Compete Act," commonly referred to as "Ban the Box," to consider the removal of language which would expose employers to new liability.  Additional restrictions and hiring costs would have been bestowed on many of NJLRA's member companies and organizations.  An effort to advance the bill out of the Senate Labor Committee was stalled pending these changes.  Learn more.

Finally, NJLRA helped to successfully stall an aggressive push to remove the civil statute of limitations in sexual abuse cases.  Underscoring the distinction between criminal and civil court as well as the limitations of creating an insurance market for retroactive liability prompted legislators to reconsider their support of the measure.  Learn more.

STRENGTHENING OUR COURTS
N.J. Supreme Court considers Rules of Evidence at NJLRA's request

One of NJLRA's top priorities is to prompt the New Jersey Supreme Court to review our state's Rules of Evidence.  At issue is whether the current Rules foster unclear rulings, and whether they attract out-of-state plaintiffs in a phenomenon known as 'litigation tourism.'

We led an effort to lobby the Court, and were joined by many of our members in a letter to the Court's Evidence Committee.  Our partners included the New Jersey Business & Industry Association, the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce, the Commerce & Industry Association of New Jersey, the New Jersey Hospital Association, the Medical Society of New Jersey, and the Healthcare Institute of New Jersey.

NJLRA is pleased to report that as a result of our leadership on this matter, the Court will review New Jersey's Rules of Evidence and will report its findings within a year.   Learn more.

MEDICAL LIABILITY REFORM
Defining goals for collaborative success

The rising cost of medical liability insurance continues to put New Jersey physicians at a disadvantage.  Together with the New Jersey Hospital Association, NJLRA has lead an effort to unify the groups representing medical practitioners and insurers on policy priorities.  Together we are changing the conversation in the Legislature about enacting meaningful and comprehensive medical liability reform.
