The Latest in Immigration Reform News

On June 27, 2013 the Senate, in a 68-32 vote, passed S. 744, the immigration reform bill entitled "Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act." Now that the bill has passed the Senate it has been sent to the House of Representatives for consideration.

The House of Representatives can move forward in different ways.  The House can consider the Senate bill directly, but Speaker John Boehner has suggested that this is not the way the Republican majority will precede. In the alternative, the House can consider piecemeal legislation that could be sent to a conference committee with the Senate's bill, or move forward with its own comprehensive bill that could then be sent to a conference committee with the Senate's bill.  Lastly the House can do nothing, letting the issue die until the next session of Congress.

Right now, we are waiting to see what the House will do with immigration reform.

New Provider for Indian Visa Services in US

The Indian embassy in Washington has contracted a new service provider to provide Visa/OCI/PIO and renunciation services with effect from July 1, 2013 on its behalf and has promised better services.

Accordingly, BLS International Services has commenced operations for various services from Washington, New York, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and Atlanta, where its consulates are located, the Indian embassy announced Wednesday. However, visa operations will begin in Atlanta from July 18.

As the BLS International Services have just begun operations, some initial difficulties in transition are being faced, the embassy said.

It also stated that the BLS International Services will also be handling all cases that were earlier submitted to Travisa Outsourcing, the previous service provider, and are still pending with the embassy/Consulates for various reasons.

The announcement stated that, as BLS International Services is setting up the tracking system for these applications, some delay may be encountered in answering questions relating to those cases.

The embassy acknowledged that applicants have been facing some hardship in submitting applications, obtaining appointment dates, and reaching out to the BLS International Services call centers. The embassy and the consulates are constantly monitoring the functioning of BLS International Services and guiding them in this transition period, in order to deliver efficient services to the satisfaction of all applicants.

The embassy said that, in cases where serious difficulties are being faced by applicants, such cases may be brought to the notice of the embassy and consulates concerned for redress.

Visas & Work Permit Processing Delays Expected During Ramadan

Please note, Visas and Work Permit processing delays over the coming weeks in the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and parts of Asiaduring observance of Ramadan and Eid-al-Fitr. Many government offices worldwide reduce their hours during Ramadan and close for Eid-al-Fitr.

In most of the world,Ramadan is expected to begin on July 10 (depending on lunar sightings) and end on August 8. Eid-al-Fitr is expected to be observed on August 8 and 9, though the exact dates will vary by country. Processing delays could continue in the weeks following Ramadan, due to application backlogs that accumulate during the closures.

Please ensure you reach the appropriate office for exact hours of operations and holidays.
