University Of Chicago Works On Its Neighborhood

Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood is midway through an extensive commercial redevelopment that aims to cure a blighted retail district. Spearheaded by the University of Chicago, the $250 million project will include the construction of Harper Court, a 600,000-square-foot mixed-use property, and the renovation of the defunct Harper Theater complex, which will eventually house office and retail space. The New York Times reports that universities serving as redevelopment engines has been successful in other communities.
