Help BCD Office Keep Congregation Leader Information Updated

During the summer and early fall, the district office and District Executive needs to be able to contact congregation presidents, treasurers, ministers and religious educators. We are asking that congregation office staff send information about newly elected presidents, treasurers and newly called/engaged ministers and religious educators to the district office by July 1. Send name, address, phone number and email address to ballouchanning@verizon.net with cc to zelaz@aol.com as soon as individuals are elected, called or hired.

Congregation Events on District Calendar

Congregations are invited to list their major events such as holiday fairs, installations, yard sales, etc. in the BCD calendar that appears on the BCD website. Send event, congregation name, date and time to the BCD office, ballouchanning@verizon.net.

Ask the Right Question*

Leaders do not need to have all the answers.

Leaders need to be able to ask the right questions

The end of the church year is a good time for a board to step back from routine matters and to candidly reflect on how well the board is meeting its governance responsibilities. Engaging in such a task helps the board to discover areas for improvement, as well as establish common understanding of its roles and responsibilities. Some questions to ask...

  • How well was our vision, mission and plans incorporated into what we did?
  • Did we ask the "big questions" about operations or did we deal with minutia ?
  • Are we all fully involved and how well did we work together?
  • What can we do to better our board operations next year?

News from the Lager UU World

Congregation GA delegates who are unable to travel to Phoenix can participate from offsite at (http://www.uua.org/documents/its/120525_offsite_updated.pdf). Using online and telephone technology, off-site delegates can watch live streaming video of all Plenary sessions, speak and vote during business Plenaries, and listen and vote during business mini-assemblies.

  • Workshop on Identity-Based Topics for Youth

A one-hour, video-based workshop on sexual orientation and ethnic/racial identity issues is now available for religious professionals and youth advisors from the UUA Youth and Young Adult Ministry office. Information about the program is available at http://www.uua.org/documents/lfd/120525_youthvideo_workshop.pdf

  • In Conversation about Congregations and Beyond

The Congregations and Beyond conversation, sparked by UUA President Peter Morales' paper (http://www.uua.org/uuagovernance/officers/president/moralespeter/192145.shtml) of the same title, has become a major initiative of the UUA. Guided by Director for Congregational Life, the Rev. Terasa Cooley, the initiative involves helping congregations who want to "lower their walls" as well as reaching out through social media, new models of "congregation" and other means to connect with the nearly 75% of self-identified UUs who are not currently members of congregations. An additional thread of conversation is around building new financial models for sustaining ministry.

The UUA does not expect to create a "program" to address all of these ideas, but hopes to provide the connective tissue that will harness the many vital efforts already underway in our larger body of multigenerational leaders. For more information, a 12-minute presentation (http://www.youtube.com/v/gtkNcvOz83M?feature=autoshare&version=3&autohide=1&autoplay=1) and jump into the conversation on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/groups/334403263248852/)
