SCRA and MATIMOP announced the recipients of the initial round of awards for the SC-Israel R&D agreement. The bilateral projects are a result of the collaborative industrial research and development program established in October 2013 between the Government of the State of South Carolina and the Government of the State of Israel.

The first project will create a centralized approach for structuring "free text" medical research data. This previously "unstructured" data will be made accessible in a standardized form, enabling access for the wider medical research community. The two-year research program partners Columbia-based Health Sciences South Carolina and Israeli-based CliniWorks

The second project will explore flame retardant chemicals and potential applications for the textile industry. The one year project partners Greenville-based Alexium with Israel Chemicals.

Georgia's Pratt Industries and Israel's LightApp Receive BIRD Grant

The Board of Governors of the Israel-U.S. Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation, approved $8.9 million in funding for 11 new projects between Israeli and American companies. Among these projects, LightApp (Herzliya, Israel) and Pratt Industries (Conyers, GA) will jointly develop resource optimization for paper manufacturing facilities.

The BIRD Foundation promotes collaboration between Israeli and American companies in various technological fields for the purpose of joint product development. In addition to providing conditional grants of up to $1 million for approved projects, the Foundation assists by working with companies to identify potential strategic partners and facilitate introductions. Projects submitted to the BIRD Foundation are thoroughly reviewed by evaluators appointed by the National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) and by evaluators appointed by the Chief Scientist's Office of the Israeli Ministry of Economy.
