Emails
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We had lots of positive feedback about our 12 Days of Christmas Specials, but we also had a few customers that complained about the number of emails.  The last thing I want to do is to send emails to a customer that does not want them.  In this vein, we have 4 email lists that we will use to send out emails.  The first one is the monthly newsletter, the second one will be used for special promotions, the third one for notification of Local Events and the fourth one for Special Coupons.
The Special Coupons is used to send out the Birthday Coupon, as well as, any other coupon that we want to send directly to you.  If you opt-out of all lists, you will not receive your notification of you Birthday Coupon.  It will still be in your My Account section of the web site, but you won't get the notification.
You can use the link at the bottom of the page to edit your settings.  If you only want the monthly newsletter, make sure the box for the "Periodic Specials" is unchecked.  If you want to get the special mailings, make sure the Periodic Specials" is checked.
Learn to Brew Day
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The home brewing side of our business, as well as, the number of new home brewers has grown significantly this year, creating a lot of home brewers with questions.  To help you out, we will be brewing more frequently at the store, this year.

The first brew day at the store will be on Saturday, January 5, 2013.  We will brew 2 batches of Brewer's Best beer kits with one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  Hopefully, by brewing twice, we can be more accomodating to your schedule.  If you are new to the hobby, this will be an excellent opportunity to not only watch, but to ask questions about the home brew process.

If you have any questions about the event, please feel free to call the store and ask for Brian or Derrick.
Old World versus New World Styles

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We get a lot of calls and emails asking for recommendations for wine kits.  Besides whether you like red or white, dry or sweet, the most important question is "What style do you prefer?"  I recently found this brief descriptions of the comparison between "Old World" and "New World" styles and thought it would be helpful to you.
It is common belief that Old World wines refer to wines from the Old World (specifically wine regions in countries like France, Italy and Spain) and that New World wines refer to wines from the USA, South America and Australia.  This benchmark might have been true in the past but, nowadays, one can no longer rely on this simplistic classification.  Today, when we pit New World wines against Old World wines, we are actually comparing the wine styles and the wine making processes more than the wines' place of origin.
Wine Styles of Old World Wines
What are the typical characteristics of Old World wine styles?  Compared to New World wines (i.e. wines that have New World wine styles), Old World wines tend to be less bold, less vibrant in color, more delicate, and more elegant.  They also tend to have higher  and better natural blance.  Old World wines also feature more of the characteristics of the grape varietals used and their Appellation or terrior.  In Old World wine styles, higher minerality is usual.  Wines of the Old World wine style, moreover, are typically made according to the traditional wine making guidelines of their region of origin.
Wine Styles of New World Wines
Wines that are considered to be New World wines are characterized by wine styles that are almost always bolder and more luscious than Old World wine styles.  They are often bursting with fruit aromas from the get go.  Typically, they also have higher alcohol content since, in the New World style of wine making, grapes are often left to ripen longer/ripen faster; this can be attributed to the warmer climate in New World wine regions.  New World wines, moreover, tend to have mid-to-light acidity levels.  The nose is also less delicate and sophisticated.
The Rule and the Exceptions that Prove the Rule
There are, of course, exceptions to this two-way classification system.  Some young Barolos and Barberas are known for their "boldness" and higher-than-typical alcohol content.  These are probably the exceptions that prove the rule, though.
Once again, remember the general rule for comparing New World and Old World wine styles.  Old World wines (i.e. wines exhibiting Old World wine styles) have lower alcohol content, are more delicate and are more terrior-driven than New World wines.  On the contrary, New World wines (i.e. wines exhibiting New World wine styles) are typically big, bold and fruity.  Furthermore, they have light to medium acidity and have higher alcohol content than Old World wines.
This information was obtained from WineVibe.
This is primarily why we carry so many brands of wine kits.  Cellar Craft (Vineco) and RJ Spagnols tend to produce wines more in the New World Style, while Mosti Mondiale wine kits are more like the old world style.  Hopefully, this information will help you in selecting which wine kits will be more to your taste.
WineMaker Magazine Competition
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We are going offer prizes this year for any of our customers that win a medal in the WineMaker Magazine International Competition.  The prizes will be as follows:

  1. If the wine is from a wine kit and the manufacturer offers a prize, we will match it.
  2. If the wine is from one of our manufacturers that do not offer a prize or a manufacturer that we do not sell, we will give you a gift certificate for $50.00.
  3. If the wine is not from a wine kit, we will give you a gift certificate for $50.00.

In order to receive a prize from us, you must list "The Wine Maker's Toy Store" as your retailer.

As to the prizes from the manufacturers, currently, all we know is that Mosti Mondiale will give you a free kit from the same line for every one of their wines for which you earn a medal.  We have not heard what Cellar Craft or Spagnols will do, but when we do, we will let you know.
