Design the Logo for the APA National Conference

The Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA Washington) is seeking a logo design for the National APA conference to be held in Seattle in April 2015. The conference will attract approximately 5000 planners from across the nation and the world. The logo will be used:

  • For way-finding (on signs in and around the Seattle Convention Center),

  • On local publications, including the Planners Guide to Seattle and the Puget Sound, walking and driving tour brochures, etc.

  • On a souvenir pin for attendees,

  • On advertising materials, and banners and posters at the conference, and

  • On correspondence related to the conference from the local host committee.

Recognition

The designer will be recognized on the chapter website and newsletter, and in conference materials, thus giving the logo and its designer wide exposure to planning professionals, organizations and companies across the Pacific Northwest. The designer will also receive a $ 750 stipend.

Conference Theme

The conference will focus on regional and local community planning initiatives to enhance sustainability. This broad theme will include a more focused discussion of the creative inventions and reinventions that have taken place to further sustainability - everything from re-use of older buildings to local food production to technological innovations to revising plans, policies and codes with a focus on sustainability.

The conference will also showcase regional cooperation among British Columbia and Oregon planners, elected officials and Native Americans tribes throughout the region.

Design parameters

  • The design should exemplify Seattle, the Puget Sound and the conference theme.

  • The design must work well at several scales, given the various ways it will be used.

  • All entries must be free of any copyright or other intellectual property claims.

  • APA National has branding standards (at http://www.washington-apa.org/about/boardmeetings under the resources list) and the Washington Chapter has a specific color assigned to it. The conference logo must work with these standards.

  • Color is preferred, but a maximum of 3 colors is suggested.

  • The designer will be required to provide the final logo in electronic format at least 300 DPI and in CMYK color.

  • We would like to be able to use the design after the conference, so it should work with or without including the year (2015) which is typically included on souvenir pins.

  • The designer must be willing to make or have changes made to their design at the discretion of the APA - Washington.

  • Upon completion of the design, the Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association will acquire ownership by assignment of copyright, and the designer of the logo will disclaim any trademarks and without limitation all of the rights related to the logo design.

  • By submitting an entry, participants unreservedly accept these rules, criteria and conditions.

Selection Process

Designers interested in assisting the conference committee with the design should submit their qualifications and responses to the following questions by 5:00 PM on Wednesday, July 30, 2014.
